Considering the number of people now alleged to have been there, perhaps the point was to not make a big deal out of 2 of a dozen or more who were invited by his staff. He "hid" his meeting with a gay former student until he had to balance to PR with the Davis fallout.

Or he could have been annoyed once he saw Davis was invited and didn't mention any of it because he wanted to avoid the media attention to something he didn't have control over.
