You have to ask yourself (universal for both) who is more likely to lie:  The clergy people who were gassed on their own property or the administration that changed their story multiple times about the gassing and have a record of lying every day about even the most mundane subjects.

Does that mean the clergy were not lying or mistaken?  Of course not.  There are no absolutes.  But there are trends and patterns and ability to discern truth based on outside factors.
