This is one of my big issues with American politics. The parties are literally only there to win elections. The officials, once in office, are only loosely tied to the party and have no formal ties to it. They may caucus with others that were pushed forward by the same established organization, but they don't have to share platforms and really have no loyalty other than the parties hold the purse strings.
