Yes and no.

You have to understand why JFK stated that his faith would not impact policy decisions.

In the 60's we were a far less secular nation than we are now.  In the 60's had JFK been any denomination but Catholic, he could have mixed his faith and politics and it would not have been a big deal.

In the 60's Catholics were not looked upon very favorably by Southern Evangelicals/protestants, and Kennedy being the first Catholic president scared the crap out of them, after all, he was gonna be in cahoots with Pope! 

All the criticism of his Catholic faith prompted Kennedy to deliver a speech solely on this matter to which he said in a nutshell that his faith (Catholic) or any other should be separate and will not impact his policy decisions.
