I think the number is a LOT closer than you realize. The average effective tax rate for someone making 50k is closer to 12% (when you include FICA and federal). The average for all taxpayers (including the top 1%) just under 20%, so it's a difference of only 8%.
But really you should also count the employer match on FICA, which is another 6.2%. Then you have state and local taxes. Sales tax. Possibly property taxes. Now we're up closer to 30%, or 15k, which would be in the ballpark of what someone making 50k spends on food, housing and clothing.
Of course, when liberals make a habit of misleading people on how much taxes they actually pay, then it's easy to mislead people that such a statistic is misleading....so much so they go and spread the misinformation themselves like good disciples
