One if my first "real" jobs, the manager put me on salary at $9 an hour. The average week was 70 hours. After a few months I worked up the courage to tell him that was less than minimum wage. It wasn't, he said, because I could use the ot as comp time. That kept me on for a few more months as I'd put in for time off requests only to have them denied.
I quit after several months but did go back to the company after hr found out and offered me my job back, hourly at a higher pay rate.
