Thomas Jefferson did not print them in English. He purchased two copies in English (his first was destroyed in a fire) because his encounter with a Muslims from Tripoli left him curious about Islam after he was informed that their religion gave them the right to attack ships of other nations and enslave the prisoners they took. There were printings of the Koran in the country starting in 1806 and it was not uncommon for men with some education to have a copy and be familiar with it.
Of course, Jefferson said it best himself. "For it is in our lives, and not from our words, that our religion must be read. By the same test the world must judge me.”
