Geno Stone is never even around deep balls EVER
Rankins gets NO PRESSURES at all.....
These dudes are my 1 and 2 reasons why the D sucks

This topic was covered on Locked On Bengals.
Both have been very disappointing signings.
They were mentioning a big part to the Ravens' and Stone's individual success was Mike Macdonald's defensive scheme.
Ravens pass coverage has declined since Macdonald left.
This is Rankins's worst pressure percentage rate since his rookie year. Only 2% pressure rate.
Normally he's at ~9% they said.
For someone who pays closer attention than me to the DL during games...are they ever doing stunts?
I feel like they are not, but maybe I just haven't noticed?
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

I'm old enough too remember Dexter Jackson and Sam Adams in 2006. Karlos Dansby in 2016 and Preston Brown in 2018 have to be up their as well.
Rankins and Stone have to be up their as well/ more surprising because of the recent hits in free agency and both are coming off good season.

Yep, Bryant is the winner, also Awntan Odom is a good nominee.

There’s a LOT of competition in this franchise’s history.
We’ve basically had 2 good free agencies (20/21) in the 30 some odd years under the current FA system. And even 20 was only saved by Reader and Bell.

They need another free agency like 21 if they want to get this turned around in a hurry.

Stone should be cut after this season.

Add in the production they got from Trent Brown and it does prove to be a weak and meager free agent class. The only redeeming quality of this free agent haul is that Burrow and Gesicki were able to get on the same page and groove with it. Also, Cody Ford has been able to step up and play better than I thought that he was capable of.
Worst FA haul ever for the Bengals? Highly debatable, but definitely noteworthy.
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

Can you believe we passed on resigning Reader (2 years, 22 million with Detroit), someone we knew was good in our defense, to sign Rankins (2 years, 24.5 million with us), who was an average player when he wasn't playing the Bengals?
In 116 career games, Sheldon has 30.5 sacks. A little over 1/4 a sack per game.
Against the Bengals, in 4 games, he has 6 sacks. 1.5 sacks per game.
It almost defies belief that they would make such a bad "swap."

It was a massive shock to see Reader not re-signed. I think that the FO must have just made him an embarrassingly low offer, and when Detroit made him a fair offer he said "screw you guys" to the Bengals FO. How the Bengals came to the idea that he might sign a ridiculously low deal, possibly loaded with performance escalators given he was coming off of a second quad tear, after he had already shown the ability to recover and play well after the same serious injury previously is a bit of a head scratcher. Whatever the truth of that situation we don't know and are only to speculate. However what we do know is that the FO was obviously caught completely off guard, as they had taken no actions to sign a different NT previous to Reader signing with Detroit. They were then left holding their jocks, so to speak, as all of the quality NTs were signed by then.
Sheldon Rankins was a panic signing, and like most decisions not properly thought out, it has proven to be a waste.

It should be on the table, for sure.
Only $1.5 mill in dead cap for Stone after this season, freeing up $6.5 mill in cap.
Only $2 mill in dead cap for Rankins after this season, freeing up $10.5 mill in cap.
If you told me Bengals could get back an extra $17 mill in cap and put toward 1-2 new dudes, I'd say 100% do it.

So I am not sure if I believe this or not...
But it REALLY seems like we target FAs that play well against us the season prior. Stone and Rankins best games of the season were against us.
It's just hilarious to me if we base our free agent evaluations on that.

Have to have!!!!
I'm not saying next season will be Joe Burrow's last good year. But in the same breath, he's not getting younger. If we have another "put a band aid on it" off season my hope is gonna be in the gutter.

Absolutely!!
We have to put big money in the trenches this off season, among other things.

Odom was actually somewhat productive.
The answer to this question is Antonio Bryant. Dude signed a 4 year 27 million dollar deal and practiced like once I believe. Comedy.

You may be onto something there, it is awfully coincidental.

It's not just last year. In his career prior to 2024, Rankins has had 29.5 sacks against 19 different teams in 76 games (he has 109 career games before 2024. The other 33 games are against teams who he has not recorded a sack against). Among those 19 teams, there are only two teams in which he is averaging more than 0.5 sacks per game. The Chargers and the Bengals.
The Bengals, he has 6 career sacks in 4 career games against us. Yes. Every game against us, he's had at least 1 sack.
And the Chargers, he has 1 sack in 1 game.
Over his career, he's been a quality pass rusher against exactly 1 team, and that team signed him this past off season.
