Fields an upgrade for Steelers

Also … with whom has the message gotten stale?  Players need to stick around a while for that to happen.  How many of today’s players were even on the roster seven years ago? I didn’t examine the whole thing, but I can tell you there aren’t many.  The starting offense has turned over completely, but there are still a few on the current D: Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt.  Do you think the message has gotten stale with them?  Just because you and other fans are tired of hearing Tomlin’s voice doesn’t make it so with the players, and they’re the ones who matter.

I think Tomlin says to Watt, Heyward, Minkah: You're great go do your thing.  If he had more coaching ability he would find a way to scheme Watt out of those double teams.

Those guys know what they are doing and he doesn't NEED to tell them, or coach them.  Those guys probably watch more film that Tomlin does on their own.

Short of that he relies on the assistants probably more than other coaches.  IMHO that's why the O is better this year...his guy is gone.  And it's why the D is up and down. his guy is still there.

But, to your point, Tomlin's message is platitudes and cliches.  He would get old fast.  He's a rah, rah guy in the locker room and in games.

I can't wait to see Hard Knocks and see what we are missing from his coaching during games.  I've asked several beat reporters to tell me what he does: sitting with players, going over strategy, anything other than wear his shades at night and wink at the camera when they win.

So when I say he's gone stale I mean it happens and that his "style" may have worn thin or is outdated today.

Oh the yinzers are gonna yinz.

They were singing the praises of the special teams a couple weeks ago and I noted that the Steelers were one bad game from them calling for Danny Smith's head.

Wins are great.  Winning seasons are wonderful.  I'm all in on winning!

But unless the team get get a playoff win, or two, Tomlin will always be a Marty Schottenheimer with a Super Bowl win.

Ha!  I've cut back on most social media so I don't come around here as much.

But, yeah but the message is the same:  Win a playoff game.

Yinzers are going nuts about "Russell cooking!" because he put 414 up on the Bengals.  The Bengals.

The Bengals couldn't stop the most obvious QB keeper in the history of the NFL on the Steelers last drive.

You defense is atrocious.

Last year Pickett dropped 300+ in the first post-Canada game and the Yinzers went wild...lol

Steeler s control their own destiny.  And all it took was replacing Tomlin's pick for OC and QB.   Smirk

I will never root for the Stealers to make the playoffs let alone win a Playoff game, but as I said repeatedly.

Tomlin is a Great coach—another year without a losing record that is outstanding.

Such a hypocrite, wasn't it you who were against Russell replacing Fields? Rolleyes

Tomlin is a very good coach who has had either a future HOF QB or a fantastic defense his entire career.

He has never developed a player.

Pickens and JPJ are just penalty machines and Tomlin will not do anything about either.  he will hope the "locker room" corrects it so he can still be a "players coach".

He has a losing record in the playoffs and hasn't won a playoff game in seven years.  They only made the playoffs recently because the playoff expanded. And since the last playoff win in 2016 they've missed the playoffs 3 out of seven years while being one and done the other four.  Including home playoff games.

Heck, between the SB loss to the Packers and the next playoff win they were:
12-4 - one and done in the playoffs.
8-8 - missed the playoffs.
8-8 - missed the playoffs
11-5 - one and done in the playoffs.

500 is great...unless you miss the playoffs.

After 17 years he still doesn't understand clock management or challenges...and refuses to get help with it as so many other teams have.

And I was wrong that Wilson couldn't still play at a high level.  I maintain that Fields is still the "future" of the team given his upside, but again, Tomlin has never brought in a player that he made great.

The Steelers offense looks so much better with someone other than MT's buddy running it and MT's QB pick running it.

The defense just lost to the Browns and gave up 38 (minus a defensive score on both sides) to the Bengals.

I really want this team to do well, of course I want them to win and win another super bowl.  But I've seen this team roll over in the playoffs again and again and again under Tomlin.

So until he wins a playoff game again he isn't "Great".  He's a guy who had a really good team that won a SB and then spent the rest of his career hoping he could keep the team above 500.  Knowing full well he could have had losing seasons and still never be fired because that isn't what the ownership ever does.

Marvin Lewis with a playoff win and two super bowl appearances.

Let me tell you too, all the "he'd have a job as soon as he was released" talk is great.  I'm sure the 30 other teams would love to not have a losing season for 17 years.  But how long would the fan base of 30 other teams put up with a coach that can't win in the playoffs for nearly a decade?

When the Steeler field a great team fans expect wins and want playoff success.  Tomlin hasn't proven he's the coach that can do the latter in recent years.   IMHO.

I'll criticize Tomlin as much as anyone, but this is demonstrably false.  He's developed TJ, Heyward, Herbig, Wilson, Pickens, Wallace, Brown, Juju, Decastro, Villanueva, Frazier, Highsmith, Warren, JPj, I could literally go on and on.  Unless your point is the HC doesn't actually "develop" anyone. Tomlin has his faults, but this is a silly assertion.

With the next 3 weeks the Steelers will be expected to lose.

I expect you to crawl out and whine about Tomlin each week with the climax of them losing in the first round again.  Hilarious
