Let’s Talk Pollack; Again

Bengals 2022 ppg w/ Chase: 25.5
Bengals 2022 ppg w/o Chase: 28.0

Clearly we should just cut Tee, and Burrow, and Chase and get even better on offense. It doesn't matter who we played when they were out vs when they were in, or any other circumstances like the traditional Taylor shitty start to seasons. We scored more points when they were out, so clearly we're better without them. PPG says it's so.

I wouldn’t insinuate the Offense got worse with those players out then. Sure people would but the only thing that matters is ppg. The “ton of help” needed to get through those games that led to higher ppg’s can’t be considered a knock on anyone if it meant production.

Matter of fact you can say that was good coaching..

Hell, Drew Sample had a pass blocking grade of 35.7 against the Titans. That has to be one of his worst ever. He obviously wouldn’t have to help chip as much with Orlando playing.

Coaches worried about it and they solved it. And the offense reached greater heights. Who gets the credit for it? Zac hasn’t. Pollack hasn’t. We can give credit where it’s due even if overall Pollack hasn’t been great.

This is still his best year coaching given what he worked with, and the Offense not missing a beat and actually improving.

Way too small of a sample size to proclaim it’s “solved.” Surviving a few games against terrible teams is one thing, having to rely on Cody Ford or Devon Cochran for the majority of a season would be quite another. It’s crazy to think there’s no drop off going from Orlando to backups and 3rd stringers.

That would be like thinking everything was “solved” during our last playoff run when we survived with Carman, Scharping, Adeniji, etc for a couple games.

Pollock should have been 1st main assistant to be let go before this season and little has changed, hopefully we will move on from him after this season.

This is just like earlier in the year when people were like "yay, the defense is fixed!" after the Giants and Browns game.

Half or more of Burrow's hits are Burrow's fault for holding the ball too long.

Bengals are tied for 15th in the league in sacks allowed per game at 2.4.
Previous year, they were 25th at 2.9 sacks allowed per game.
Year before that, 26th at 2.8 sacks allowed per game.
In 2021, they were last place at 3.5 sacks allowed per game.

They are doing better than previous years, albeit we still feel like Burrow takes too many hits.
Chase Brown is also doing well at RB, so that combined with the reduced average in sacks might result in FO feeling like Pollack is on the upswing and worth keeping around.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

That’s quite an exaggeration. And even if it was anywhere near that much he evens it out scrambling around and getting out of dead to rights sacks only a weekly basis.

Devin Cochran vs Myles Garrett is not a matchup I'm looking forward too.

What's the deal with Cody Ford, shouldn't he be back in action? I thought that he just had the flu or something?

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

Front office did him no favors. They didn't upgrade the interior this offseason and didn't add any quality depth. You can't bench Cappa or Volson because you don't have a solid option off the bench.

Same thing can be said about this defense. You can't bench Vonn Bell, Hubbard, etc. because all you have coming off the bench are rookies or unproven players that aren't talented.

I don't know if Lou and Pollack are good coaches or not. What I do know is that they are AT LEAST the product of their enviornment.

That and the fact that you saw the decline of Cappa coming from a mile away (did not play great last year, was injured) and Volson continuing to struggle at times and you did nothing in FA to grab a solid backup guard or take a more polished one earlier in the draft.

Piss poor hindsight and roster management.

It's called "playing out of structure", read a book.

Perhaps they should give Ford the upper hand, by running the ball straight at Myles Garrett?

And if the receivers were able to get open quicker (or better play calling that allowed them to get open quicker), maybe Burrow wouldn't have to hold onto the ball so long and turn water into wine out there.

Doesn't Burrow alter the called play at the line, based upon what he's reading before the snap?

I am sure to some extent, but from my understanding, they only typically have a few options when it comes to changed plays at the LOS, right?

Alex Cappa vs anyone is not a matchup I’m looking forward to.

I believe Zac gives him 2 plays to choose from and he can check out of run or pass but it’s not like he can just call whatever he wants.
