The Bengals are now the Dan Fouts era Chargers.

Or even the pre-Terrell Davis Broncos with John Elway.

Maybe But the Chargers, did not have a DE,like Trey Hendrickson.Get some defensive players,in the draft. And,the defense can get better.

As it turns out, there was really no option other than signing both Chase and Higgins. The agent Rocky Arceneaux (if reports are accurate) made it clear there would not be any deal with Chase unless there was one for Higgins. So, if the Bengals were backed into a corner and if these are the Dan Fouts Chargers (because the money is not there to bring in top free agents on defense), then the Bengals have to find some way to make it work in terms of a Super Bowl.

So, we can discuss "at least, they will be fun to watch" as trying to put some positive spin on a less-than-desirable situation (conveyed by at least), but the Bengals have to find a way to either break the mold that defense wins championships or have some major breakthroughs with the talent they have or acquire in the draft. Because these, I believe, were the only cards there were actually available.

Mims looks to be a very good to great RT. Jackson and Jenkins produced.

https://www.bengals.com/draft/2024

I would argue only our 3rd round pick Burton is a major concern. I loved the Newton pick in round 5. Anthony showed potential. Ali was doing very well until injured. Lee and our 2nd TE McClachlan toosoon to evalaute. Johnson showed some positives as well.

It is a huge win to get 1 very good starter in year 1. We have a chance for the 2025 class to be very good in next couple of years. Again, coaches need to develop these athletes. Other than Burton, I did not see bad rookeis.

Our FA signing of Rankins was the worst addition of the year. Keeping Cappa was the worst move keeping a player who had digressed starting in 2023

Where did I say our 2024 draft was so bad??

However the 2024 class shakes out we've still had many misses in the top rounds lately and picks that sure seem headed down miss lane.

2021 Rd 2 Carman - gone, Rd 3 Ossai - hasn't been picked back up

2022 Rd 1 Dax Hill still big question mark Rd 2 Taylor - Britt ummmmm  Rd 3 Z. Carter - gone

2023 Rd 1 Murphy - I'm praying not but he is shaping up hard as a bust. Rd 2 DJ turner ??? Rd 3 Jordan Battle ???

2024 Rd 3 Burton is the poster child for sure seems a big bust. As you say

I remember hearing an announcer saying during a fairly early in the season game, and I forget who he named but several of our top (recent) picks only had like 12 snaps or something! And this was like game 4 or so.

That's nine top draft picks that are either already gone, may well be cut this season or need semi major to very major turn arounds or they're busts.

Their batting average needs a really hot month at the plate to get this thing headed back in the right direction.

I've been seeing this sentiment echoed throughout media outlets and fans, and it's laughable. Im not here to discuss whether signing Tee was wrong or right, I just wanted to bring up this ever growing narrative that people are pushing on bengals fans.

At least it will be fun to watch.  Sick

And they say that assuming the defense will continue to be terrible. We dont know if it will improve or not. Just complete nonsense. I know Im not gonna have fun if the offense puts up 30+ and continues to lose those games for a second straight season.

I know many of you agree with this. I just wanted to vent about this AWFUL narrative

I'd rather watch a 12+ win team who scores 14-20 pts a game than watch a team with a losing record who scores 30+ week after week.
All I care about is getting to and advancing deep into the playoffs.
"Fun" and regular season don't mix.
The only thing that's fun is postseason victory.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs

Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Goodberry had a batshit crazy mock last week. He was clearly feeling the delirium of inactivity from the first 3 days free-agency. Dude just went all in with a TE and guard in 1 and 2. This thread reminds me of that.

Fair enough, but if  Bengals hit on guys in rounds 4 or later, do they credit since those picks have a poor success rate on being good in the NFL?

This study was done back in 2015 and tracked prior year rookies and then took a look at success rates by round of draftees.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/prishe/2015/05/22/tracking-nfl-draft-efficiency-how-contingent-is-success-to-draft-position/

         The overall median “percentage of games started” by those players selected in the 2010 NFL Draft is 15%;

-          1st round draftees from that season started a higher median percentage of games (67.5%) compared to players drafted in other rounds;

-          2nd and 3rd round draftees from 2010 have started roughly 34% and 36% of all possible games, respectively.

-          The median percentage of games started for players drafted in rounds 4 through 7 from the 2010 draft was extremely low, never rising above 7% of games played over the last 5 years.

Please use 2025 free agency to fix the trenches, not the draft!!!!!!!!

I saw that as well. We are sitting on our hands as far as pass rush and IOL additions. Which are two biggest areas of needs. I think its gonna be impossible to fill both properly thru the draft so might as well go heavy one way or the other. If it's me I'd say go guards as well because no Burrow and we are bottom of the league. Not fun to watch!!!

Yeah, I don't like it either. We want to win a Super Bowl and that is the bottom line. We have some damn good players to build around, let's make
the other right moves to make sure our trenches are secure. Our Defense was historically bad last season losing games where the QB and overall
Offense were playing like the best in the league. This was unacceptable and we fired everyone that had something to do with it thankfully.

We will see how much the new coaches can help us improve.

They are set on the DL from an adequate perspective. Trey is on contract. If he gets traded (doubtful) we will get a great draft spot. Ossai, Sample, & Murphy complete it. Tackles McKinley Jackson, Slaton, Hill, and Jenkins. They are looking at guard and LB I think in the draft
Romo “ so impressed with Zac ...1 of the best in the NFL… they are just fundamentally sound. Taylor the best winning % in the Playoffs of current coaches. Joe Burrow” Zac is the best head coach in the NFL & that gives me a lot of confidence." Taylor led the Bengals to their first playoff win since 1990, ending the longest active drought in the four major North American sports, en and appeared in Super Bowl LVI, the first since 1988.

They might be set there...But, man if the DE opposite Trey doesn't get sacks...our defense will be bad again.

Can't give these QB's forever to throw.

I really hope that's not the belief in-house.  Trey and some guys ain't gonna do it.  They need at least one more guy that can get pressure, either on the edge or up the middle.

It was a tough year for sure.

The only thing that salvaged it for me was having Burrow, Chase, Higgins, and Chase Brown in fantasy.

My team killed. I also had Mclauren, Josh Allen (superflex), Brock Bowers, James Cook, Montgomery, Bucky Irving, and Denvers defense.

I won the league and a couple hundred bucks so it definitely made the year tolerable.

That said, I won't be so lucky this year as none of those players will be available where I drafted them last year.

I want to see the team win.

I think there's a good chance the defense and team improves this year.
There are a lot of young players on defense that are more seasoned and we will be adding to that in the draft.
Not to mention DT should be much better this year with players healthy and bringing in TJ--who should be an anchor for us.

Why do you even watch regular season games then? Seriously, some of you guys take something that is supposed to be fun and make it the most miserable thing you act like you're forced to do. If it's that miserable for you, why do it? I'll never understand it.

The Bengals are earily similar to the Colts with Manning.

I would say the big difference is that Burrow actually beat Mahomes a few times early in his career.
And Burrow has had more injuries as well.

But the overall team makeup is quite similar.

It took Manning a long time to win it all.
His defense was never good enough--until it was, and they won a championship.

Manning did not deal with pressure well. Burrow definitely has him beat in that regard.

Warren wears 44.  Just like Manning's TE did.  Just saying.

Also, I think Manning had better lines most of the time.  Maybe not always loaded with superstars, but played well as a unit.  Also had a hellacious running back that was a star in his own right.
