Murphy - 56.5, 48.6, 56.6 (#94 of 130)

Thanks KillerGoose. Surprised Murphy was that bad against the run, this was supposed to be his strength coming out of Clemson and he had to
work on his pass rush moves. You would think that him being big last year wouldn't hurt him this bad in stopping the run, but more in his pass
rush where you have to be more athletic.

I'm hoping and praying Murphy turns it around this season. In 30 games played he's been very close to non-existent thus far. And for that reason my hope is thin, very thin.

And that's one of the main reasons (along with Trey) I strongly feel we need a top 3 rounds DE pick. We'd just be putting to many eggs in the stand pat or take a late DE pick basket.

Well, when Murphy wasn't oversized as a rookie late in the season he flashed some good stuff and he is putting in the work evidently as we see.

I am not throwing the possibility of him growing into a good player for us away.

There are good Ends after the first round this Draft as well, the Ends in the first all have questions which is scaring me away from them. We have
met with most of them though, so we might see something good. It will tell a lot by who we take, not expecting Guard in the first judging from who
we have met with in Ratledge and Savaniiaea who are 2nd to 3rd rounders.

If we go DL, I am expecting Walter Nolen who we met with, Safety, I think we go with Malaki Starks who fits as the Bates replacement.

Oh I'm not saying cut him now. It's just that I don't wanna pay out too much rope on the "oh he'll be better this season". story

TY, I knew they both were bad. I can see why Lou did not give Murphy a lot of snaps.

But Hubbard had to be one the worst starting DE's in the NFL against the pass and overall. Murohy's run defense is very bad.

In time, we will see if he improves and can become at least Hubbard when he was not the worst starting DE in football.

For sure, cannot rely on him becoming a top End all of a sudden, so far Myles Murphy has been a bust.

Looks like he is working his ass off though to shed this label, we will see.

I've been ignoring this thread because we were sold on Myles changing his body composition last offseason if anyone remembers....

Yes and then Pally reminded us Myles was injured in late August, he hurt his knee and we have no idea how close he was to 100% in 2024, so very hard to grade him on being a different player due to the injury.

I do agree, his time is running out to show he can be a solid DE, he does not need to be JJ Watt or Trey, but Hubbard solid (prior to 2024) would suffice.

Things could always turn around, but Myles Murphy is what happens when a team drafts for need. They clearly didn't wanna pay Trey a third contract, and tried to get out in front of it. I can't think of a time where drafting for need instead of BPA has ever worked out for the Bengals. Let this be a lesson if they're considering reaching for a guard.

Yeah, but this time he really means it.

I think.

You do realize Trey is on his 3rd porfessional contract, 1 with Saints and signed as FA with Bengals, then Bengals gave him 1 extension already.

This will be Trey's 4th contract. As for Bengals plans, I don't know other than they had 2 starting DE's late in their careers, Hibbard and Trey so in their opinion they may have felt Murphy (highly ranked by experts) was both a need and BPA.

In retrospect, he has not performed so a bad choice. FA and the draft is filled with teams doing a clean up on aisle 3, every team misses picks.

Yeah... They gave Trey a one year (this year) extension two years ago. Not quite the same as signing a multi-year 3rd contract when the second is up, but I'll grant you that he's put pen to paper twice with Cincinnati.

As far as Murphy being BPA... LaPorta and Achane and we're both still available off the top of my head. As far as Murphy being a need... That's what free agency is for. The draft should be about acquiring talent.

We all can analyze and say who we should have drafted years after the draft. As for the draft, I would argue the draft is full of players with UNPROVEN TALENT, FA is full of guys with proven talent.

Yes... And since free agents are often more proven than players in the draft, it seems that free agency is a better way to address needs. And this isn't about years after the draft. Many of us were puzzled by the Myles Murphy pick at the time. Some of us tried to love it while others said "Wtf?".

I'll admit, I thought Murphy was a decent pick at the time. I thought he could develop into a Hubbard replacement/backup with Ossai being Trey's deputy on the other side.

I wish I could say I was pounding the table for LaPorta, but I wasn't. I was hoping he'd last until Rd 2.

I do give myself credit for NOT pounding the table for Mayer, though that would have been fine with me.

IIRC, Branch and Porter were the 2 guys I was also considering if I'd have had the pick.

Where have I heard this story before with this organization….thats right they tried to do the same thing on the OL after the Brown family was too stubborn to pay Whitworth.  I can excuse mistakes and misses but repeating the same mistakes illustrates the incompetence of the Brown family.  Murphy is trending along the same lines as the same tackles drafted after losing Whitworth but the only difference is the Bengals didn’t rely on a washed up coach who chooses talent based on how they pour ketchup.  This organization is a sitcom TV show
