"Oh what tangled webs we weave"....The Finley situation

(11-01-2019, 12:48 PM)thompson19osu Wrote: Poor o-line and no run game. I think teams are gonna tee off on Finley and blitz the hell out of him. He does seem to have better pocket presence than Dalton but unless he is Lamar Jackson or Russel Wilson, no way he is escaping the heat that’s about to brought on him.

I agree I think we may see some flashes but I would also expect no less than 3 sacks a game with possible INT. They can shuffle any QB back there they want but until they address the o-line nothing will change.....NOTHING.

This is an accurate analysis. I truly hope Ryan Finley exceeds all our expectations but we need to make sure we manage our expectations properly. The first game he starts will be against the Baltimore Ravens and that won’t be easy because their defense plays so fast.

He is an awful NFL quarterback.

Thank god he’s gone. He sucks.  I don’t know why this is complicated for some

If Taylor does try that then he truly is clueless as a head coach.

Fred it’s the Bengals we’re talking about. I don’t think Dalton takes another snap. But a few weeks down the road who knows maybe after a few wins, Finley gets hurt I can totally see Taylor putting him in. And gosh gee ok Dalton is too nice of a guy not to say no. I wouldn’t put anything past this team.

Again, if it’s me there absolutely no reason what so ever for Andy to take another snap. At least not this season. Defeats the whole purpose of benching him. Like I said before they have to see how Finley does good or bad. How he responds and so on. If they decide he’s not the guy before the season is over then we see what we have in Dolagala.

The real possibility, the Bengals are near or at a need for a full rebuild and the sooner they embrace that the better. How quickly they tackle that and how well they do it we will only know in the next few years (so far it seems to be denial). If Finley somehow shows he can be a quality starting QB then that is just one less piece they need. If not the rebuild gets even more complicated because right now the best players on this team are entering the years where their age will catch up with them and we have not seen much from many of the younger players. So having to draft a new QB and placing a team around him will take even longer to get the team back to being competitive. I'm not saying Finley is going to the answer but it would certainly benefit the Bengals if he somehow did light it up. Just one less piece to replace in a team full of holes.

There are just too many missing pieces right now. So many that having a quality QB on the roster if it is Finely, Dalton again or a top QB draft pick the Bengals need to do more at some point to build around that.

From this point forward, he has no obligation to help this team, or help groom his replacement. His future isn't here, so it's best if he just collects a check and has a seat.

See I don’t agree with this. I don’t think he should be placed back into a game this season but if Finley goes down, Andy definitely has an obligation to this team, and millions of reasons why. He’s not the first QB to be benched and he won’t be the first QB to come back in after being benched. Again I wouldn’t put him in but if they decide to then he should suck it up and play. Just cause the guy got his feelings hurt doesn’t mean he has the right to sit around and cry about it. A QB has to get this team threw the season if one or 2 gets hurt which isn’t far fetched with this line.

One could argue that getting a better OL means your team will be better and therefore could cause you to pick later in the draft the following year(s).

Let's say the Bengals pick 12th next year after drafting Andrew Thomas this year.
If they are picking 12th, they likely are not getting a shot at the first, second, or maybe even third QB prospect in the draft.
At that point, they have to decide whether they want to give up draft picks to move up.

Or they could get a QB now given they very likely are getting a top 5 pick in what should be a good QB draft class.
They could get the QB now and deal with the QB getting having a bad OL for a year then address the OL in Rd 1 next year.

Or, you know, actually address OL in FA like a smart person would do and still get your QB in the draft.  Smirk
Drafting O-line is a great plan. Teams like the Pats And Cowboys are loaded their line with first rounders. The only thig is we suck at drafting o-line players. Williams injured, Price a bona fide bust and don't get me started on Ogbeuhi. Whoever is scouting for us needs to be shown the door and new scouts hired.

The Dalton haters will still have the "Well we just need a good QB" to fall back on.  Finley won't be the answer but that speedy RB that can throw the ball will be just "mark their words".

Bingo.  This team needs 2 starters on the o-line (3 if you don't count Jonah).  They need a full retooling of the linebacking corps.  They probably could use another young pass rusher.  They need a guy or 2 in the secondary.  The places on the roster without gaping holes have aging players that can't be expected to play in prime form for much longer.

I think they're in for a 3 year process of roster building if they manage to draft well.  Possibly shorter if they are active in free agency, but that's unlikely.  It's going to be a long slog.  I'm okay with a long slog if there's a direction to it. I don't see one right now.

The Finley promotion is a necessary step in evaluating the roster. My expectations aren't overly high. He'd need to be a find of the Brady/Wilson quality to force the team to disregard drafting a quarterback first in April.

I feel like that's where they are going, and it's going to be a tough task for Finley to change their minds.

Unless Finley looks like a perennial MVP candidate in these 8 games I’m for drafting a QB no matter what if we have a shot at the top 2 bc nothing but an ELITE QB can uplift this franchise out of the dumpster and they’ll have to keep failing till they find one but it’s our only answer. We can’t have a guy who’s good but has some key flaws. We did that with AD. This time we need to find the most perfect all around QB we can find and hope he can beat use his skill set. It’s This or we’re going to look at another 30 years without a playoff win

You can win in this league with an average QB. You can’t win with a horrible line (see the past three years). I don’t understand why there is a line of thought that a top pick for QB will solve all the problems. Get the best o line.

You can draft In the league with an inept front office but you can't draft o-linemen with the Brown families refusal to hire more scouts. Btw can we draft one first rounder who isn't damaged goods.

It might have an effect on a couple players but it will have absolutely zero effect on Mike Brown. A coupon for a free Frosty at Wendy's has more of an effect on Mike Brown.

The only problem with this is MB won't pay for top shelf interior Olinemen past their rookie contract.
