FWIW…. 35-40m is around the same percentage of cap for top paid wide receivers dating back over 10 years. The cap has doubled in 10 years and the highest guys got 17-20.

Also, comparing Burrow to two of the GOATs (two top 3 guys in SB wins, and one is only 28) may be a bit premature.

It’s certainly a team game, but almost every year in recent history, a superbowl participating team had at least two good pass catching weapons.

Eagles, smith, brown
Bengals, Higgins and Chase. Rams, Kupp and arguably OBJ after Robert woods got hurt mid season.
Tampa, Godwin/Evans and chiefs kelce/hill

You need to go back to 2019 to find two teams that had mediocre/average pass options.

Something to be said about having weapons and making the dance.

He has no bargaining chip. The Bengals own him for a minimum of four more years if they want to. All Chase is doing by not practicing, and especially if he were not to play, is hurting his brand.

It can't be overstated, we'll never know how great this team could have been with a full training camp with Burrow, Tee and Chase participating.

It'll be the question of the Burrow era if Bengals don't win a SB.

I know how close Joe and Chase are, but I can't help but wonder what kind of strain it's going to place on their friendship if the whole team comes out firing and Chase is behind and dropping passes because he did not participate. Burrow starts throwing to Tee, Burton and Gesicki, leaving Chase with less targets. Burrow understands the business side, but he will not tolerate dropped passes very much.

He absolutely has leverage. He can sit out games. 

Pretty sure people would start taking notice if he missed games...during a super bowl season...when all this team has talked about over the past three months is "starting fast". 

He'd have to give up game checks to do it, but it'd still be leverage.

Do they really want such a big chunk of the cap spent on two ...... prone to injury players? That is a significant gamble.

Here is my thing, you can get your contract two years early OR you can be the highest paid player at your position you can't have it both ways. There has to be some sort of trade off from both sides. If the Bengals are willing to put money in your pocket two years before they have to you have to be willing to take a number that is fair but not resetting the market.

This feels like bad advice from his agent in all honesty. As a team, the Bengals really shouldn't set precedent for this as the Cowboys had a few years ago with Elliott and Parsons is trying to leverage that in Dallas to also get a new deal 3 years in.

I’m starting to grow tired of WRs in general. Don’t get me wrong - I love Chase & Higgins, but WRs are quickly becoming as fungible as RBs.

They can be replaced. It’s Burrow who cannot.

I’m fine if they let him sit. This nonsense has to stop at some point.

Chase is injury prone? He had that hip thing a couple years ago, I cant remember him missing significant time other than that? 

They have the cap space to do it. The cap keeps expanding every year. The Bengals don't have any bad long term contracts. They don't have anyone extended past 2026, really. They will be more than fine.

He only has leverage because the team allows him to hold in. Their patience will run thin eventually and they have tools at their disposal to make things difficult for Chase. 

This would fall under conduct detrimental to the team for instance if he still refuses to participate. This would allow them to fine him and suspend him. They could also go after a portion of his signing bonus in this instance under the CBA. I believe if through the suspensions and refusing to be active on game days he also may not accrue a season which could delay his ability to get to free agency.

The team won't want to do a lot of these things, however they also don't have to let him act this way either. He does have a contract and they do have enforcement mechanisms.

While Burrow is certainly harder to replace than a Chase or Higgins, you're comment about WRs "quickly becoming as fungible as RBs" seems to completely contradict how NFL teams are actually operating. 

Instead of WRs becoming "quickly fungible", it's actually the opposite. Their salaries are exploding at the highest (or 2nd highest) rate of any position which indicates that NFL front offices have the complete opposite opinion than you. 

Compare that to RB salaries, the actual fungible position, and you see little gains in contract values over the last several years. Contracts tell you what positions are fungible or not.

Exactly, he acts like he is a multi-time SB champ or something. It's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. No such thing as loyalty to a team or team members. He has been to 1 SB and lost. His first year he put up some good numbers but now that the league has him figured out his numbers aren't jaw dropping.

The answer to your question is no. There is more to unpack here. When Tyreek was on the chiefs, they had 4 home grown hall of famers. Something had to give. They let Tyreek walk and paid kelce/jones.

Outside of Burrow and Chase… who needs paid that is on the same level as kelce or jones?

Teams don’t typically let elite players walk in FA. It just so happened that the chiefs hit really well over a 8-10 year period and something had to give.
