Chase not Practicing
(08-29-2024, 09:02 PM)TheFan Wrote: And yet how many times did Chad demand being the highest paid and not practice even though he was actually recurrently a top receiver every year? We aren't seeing Puka Nacua demanding a new contract. He topped Chase even without Stafford the whole year.

Puka is ineligible to ask for a new contract; you have to have 3 years of service  to ask for an extension. Unless you were undrafred.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

I'm really indifferent towards all of this. I think Chase has been there and going through what he actually needs to do to know what the offense is expecting of him. He has 1,000s of reps woth JB9. His job is nearly 100% individual work on game day in terms of on the field responsibilities (unlike an Olineman, for example). I really couldn't care less if he practices leading up to the season.

My big question is: I don't know how much cash on hand the Bengals actually have to put in escrow on guaranteed deals.

The Bengals could make Chase play the next 5 seasons..... 2024, 2025 5th year, & 3 franchise tagged seasons after that. Chase has very little leverage to force a deal.

Plus side of no practice is that he can't really get hurt before the season starts.

We are not built like the Browns where a 4th string QB and 2nd string RB make it to the playoffs.

That's why I call this the Burrow era, not the Zac, Chase, anyone else era. They should be attempting to win a superbowl at all costs under the Burrow era, but it's a business. How much are finances playing into it?
I disagree, we were a game away last with Burrow playing less than have games healthy, this is still a team that if healthy can make playoffs  with out Burrow.

This is a non-story.

Chase is not practicing, as many vets do.

He is not going to lose any chemistry with Burrow, and it is giving the younger receivers more reps and time to develop chemistry with Joe.

There are so many other things to be concerned about with this team.

Jamar Chase is not one of them.

Chase the last star WR not to have a deal regardless of how many years he has left.

It’s a shit look for the FO

Chase has a deal. He signed it.

Yep, but rookies are stuck under contact limits. Owners claimed they'd make good on second contracts, but that often isn't true.

I don't care for the hold-in antics, but the Bengals need to get this done. They bought this ticket when they telegraphed their intent by letting Bates and Reader walk while not offering Higgins a serious extension. Time to take the ride.

I can't imagine that the numbers are that significantly off between the two parties.

The two big problems that the Bengals have are A: Ja'marr knows that they intend to sign him. This isn't like Tee where there's any amount of real doubt. He has less reason to put himself at risk that a guy like Tee at this point. B: the receivers around him have all gotten paid, with the exception of Tee. The numbers have gotten pretty astronomical. Probably more astronomical than the Bengals expected. Now that the game of musical chairs is over, Chase is going to want to be the highest paid in the league at the position. At this point, the Bengals have probably cost themselves some money by waiting . Possibly a lot.

Chase was always waiting for the Jefferson deal. It wasn't because he was patient or a team player. It was because he knew waiting would get him a bigger contract. It's only going to get worse if they for some reason can't sign him before the season starts.

Goff and Tua are both on big deals. $53 million per.

*And Hurts.

And the Chiefs won back to back Superbowls after getting rid of Tyreek Hill who demanded a contract extension and who has been 1A or 1B best WR in the NFL.

CeeDee Lamb, AJ Brown, Davonta Smith, Amon Ra St Brown, and Jalen Waddle play with QBs making over 50M

I'm 100% on this train with you. He has a fully guaranteed 2 year deal worth roughly $15,000,000/per.

I think the Bengals have every right to maximize their value on these rookie contracts and the player should expect that to be the case and be surprised if they can get a new deal early instead of salty if they can't.

Valid. I meant it more rhetorically though in that the only argument Chase has for demanding his salary is his rookie year which has been topped by a 5th round pick. Using a bunch of people who either have proven on the field to be better then Chase or people who have signed for drastically less then his demands doesn't help his case.

We are not in the same league when it comes to comparing our personnel department with KC.  Their success has been aided by solid deals and excellent drafting.

And all signed for well less (except Lamb) then Chase is demanding.

It’s a lot easier to move on from your best WR when you have the greatest pass catching TE off all time.

They all signed before Jefferson did his deal as well (except Lamb).  Context is a thing.
