If weakness is DL, maybe try a 3-4?

A 3-4 defense places even more responsibility on the defensive line. Besides, there are no true nose tackles on the Bengals’ roster.

Jake you have said this forever.  It is absolutely incorrect.

Our 5-2 is a goal line, short yardage defense.  Every team runs this despite their base defense.

Our base defense is a 4-3.  Everyone here clamoring about the NT for the 3-4 are not wrong but the true defining positions are the rush linebackers, see Micah and Watt.  We have no personnel that come close to resembling the LBs required to play the 3-4.

As to our DLine, only Guy, who we just picked up off the street has actually played a 5T in the NFL, another requirement.

When were not in Nickle(which is actually our base) we play a a 5-2 slash 3-4. Hubbard and Trey both lineup as stand up Edge players(which is essentially a LB).

Even if we do run a 4-3 it's usually a 4-3 under which is essentially another word for a 3-4 or 5-2. The only time we run a true 4-3 defense is when we play Lamar.

I will concede that we have seen more 4-3 this year then in years past but it's more to do with our lack of lineman than what Lou wants to do.

Also were talking about 5-10 plays a game when we're not.in nickle? So it's not that big of a deal.

Probably more like 5 to 10.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

Right - very limited situation.

The reality is that we need to have a better approach in dime and nickel.

Just because our traditional defensive ends may stand up at times does NOT make this a 3-4 defense.  If you are suggesting that the 5-2 is the base defense we use to match heavy personnel, sure I agree with that.

But every team runs a 5-2 on short yardage.

The ONLY difference in a true 4-3 and what we run primarily is a nickel base in which we play Hilton instead of ADG which is a 4-2 nickel.  Just about every team runs some type of nickel most of the time.

In 2020 Lou was wanting to try a hybrid 3-4, but we never drafted to meet the required personnel.   If we ran a 3-4 base, Trey and Sam would be listed as LB  instead of DE, see Watt and Highsmith with the Steelers.
