I thought it was the former.

If it was, I would think he wouldn't want to consider the Bengals.
I know I'd hold animosity toward a former employer if they showed me the door then wanted me back years later.

Yup, get that Amazon money and that commercial money. Work about 1/10th the hours of a coach and spend the rest of the time with your family.

He left to join Freeman at ND. But I thought I read somewhere his family is still in Cincy.

Those same people also forget he was named an All-Pro while with the Bengals and regarded as one of the best safeties in the NFL which is why the Bengals franchise tagged him and why Atlanta signed him to the big contract.  In Cincinnati just like Atlanta, he was regarded as one of the best safeties in the NFL.

People also tend to remember him as being an All-Pro all the time, and that just wasn't the case either. Jessie Bates either played great or played poorly, and there wasn't much in-between. Playoff Jesse was great, head in a funk Jesse not so much. Remember when he lead the team in missed tackles????

Jessie Bates is the best post safety in the NFL.

He was also second on the team in tackles the years he lead in missed tackles with Shawn Williams because the DL and LB play was horrendous. Jessie Bates leaving is the #1 reason the secondary fell apart in their heavy cover 1/3 defense.
