That's why I said a few pages back I got a feeling it's gonna be Golden. He's worked for them before.....such a Bengals move.

Yeah, but... The Taylor era is supposed to stand up to the FO and get what he wants. He can't lay down like Marvin did and let the FO railroad his ass into accepting poor talent to save a few bucks. At least that's what we hoped for when there was a HC change. Looks like that may be another disappointing expectation.

Bengals FO commencing early with the underachieving. These finalists are the definition of meh. Hopefully it’s Graham out of these two.

The odds of people going "sure regret firing Lou now, huh?" has probably increased.
All because the Bengals apparently can't do anything better than a "meh" hire.

I tell you one thing, he would make Pratt start tackling instead of just ripping at the ball. (nothing wrong with ripping at the ball as long as the tackle is secured) I'm warming up to the idea. With our mostly young defense, maybe he can regenerate the Fisher-Price package.
Has he gotten better though? Also his time in Cincy passed, re-hires like this dont excite me much.

Golden has had one of the top 5 defenses in college football the past three years..ND playing in the championship game is primarily due to their defense..We would be lucky to get the guy

Yeah, we heard you the first time. Can't you just see that we're simply overjoyed at the prospect of having him on board?
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

Some things have changed, some haven't. Simmons is still here, and they're always going to let familiarity trump EVERYTHING. Having said, that, he's done a nice job in South Bend. Some folks more knowledgeable than me say he's the biggest reason for the Irish's success. Folks point to his lack of success at the U as damning, but that team was in a transitional period from NCAA sanctions and sought to clean up their act more than win. He cleaned it up, and had moderate success on the field. That was not easy task.

LOL at posters that only want somebody that they want. First off, you're correct. Golden has been a great DC at ND. He was the LB coach here during during the SB year and did a great job. Zak knows him well, has worked with him and trusts the guy which is probably the main reason why coaches get hired in this great big fraternity: existing relationships and trust.

Why fire Lou to just hire is understudy? Doesn't make much sense to me but who knows what this organization is thinking?

Everybody anyone is mentioning is a re-treaded tire. Coaches get fired, hired, fired, hired. It's the same bunch over and over.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not pushing for him, I just think people make too much about time passing him by. He's kept up with the game.

Hey, I am not for Golden either as my top pick, but our Linebackers were much better with him here and he actually has been great at ND.
Better resume' than Lou had before he came here.

I don't necessarily despise the Golden hire. I'm just not convinced that it's the hire that makes this a championship defense.
Also don't love that it plays into the idea Willie Anderson spoke of when it comes to coaches and hiring staff; ie most of the time these guys just hire their friends. Familiarity means more than just about anything, especially here.
Golden has a fine defense at ND. He also has a roster with talent. Even in a down year, ND is going to have the horses to go up against just about anyone outside of the elite. He's not getting that here. The scheme and the execution will have to make up for a likely talent deficiency. They aren't going to have the cap for major retooling. There are only so many draft picks that will be day 1 starters.
On top of talent, it sure seems like there was a culture issue on defense last year. Poor discipline and lack of communication were pretty apparent. Being out of shape and unfocused are issues that go beyond just the talent deficit. Is bringing in a guy that worked under the guy that lost the culture going to change it for the better? Also no idea, but I think the question is fair.

I'd much prefer someone with a track record as an NFL DC. Saleh, Allen, and Eberflus were my top 3.
Golden is a bit above meh.
Then again, we don't need s championship level D. Just stop being toothless.
