The other thread about popular bands you don't like got me to thinking....
Who do you think are the most artistic/influential bands or singers? My qualifications would be the ability to crank out multiple hits that are original (which includes not making multiple recordings that are very similar to their own other hits). If you add the ability to find success in multiple genres, then you're on an even other level.
I'll start with Ray Charles.

I would think many groups would list Led Zeppelin as influential.

Johnny Cash effortlessly blurred the lines between country, rock n roll, and gospel.
The late Chuck Berry showed folks what an electric guitar can do.
Was Black Sabbath the first metal band?
I'm not sure how many pop or rock singer/ songwriters predate Buddy Holly.
I'm gonna break every record they've got. I'm tellin' you right now. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but it's goin' to get done.

Hell, there hasn't been anything original since the 70's and into the 80's. Everything and everyone sounds the same these days or I'm just old now and am supposed to say that.
