Star Wars Reactions (Spoilers)

(12-18-2017, 04:12 PM)Wyche Wrote: I agree.

I don't get the hate for it.  It was a lot of fun to watch, and brought back a lot of memories from my childhood.

I can't see it as being even in the same breath as the prequels.  They weren't even entertaining......and then add Jar Jar to the whole mix?  Yeah, this was a MUCH better film.

There were some parts that were questionable, like Leia surviving space....but overall, I liked the movie, and was entertained by it.  It's not "A New Hope", or "Empire Strikes Back", but it was maybe better than "Return of the Jedi".

I see a lot of hate for the midget furry pseudo-penguin thingies. I barely even noticed them. Nowhere near as obnoxious/prevalent as Jar Jar or the Ewoks.

I feel like since VII was essentially a remake of IV, people went into VIII expecting Empire. That's a really stinking high bar to put out there. I feel like Johnson did an excellent job with callbacks and paying homage to both Empire and RotJ without copying the same formula and managed to make his own movie, flaws and all.

It's an unpopular opinion, but I also like how Last Jedi treated some of the wildly unnecessary subplots. Last Jedi already ran a little long. Throwing in more Phasma, Knights of Ren, Snoke Backstory etc would have made the movie feel even more bloated. And the Snoke death certainly served (at least for me) as the "holy shit!" moment a la the "I am your father."

I think that today's day and age of endless speculation and spoiler hunting is what hyped up those characters like Phasma, Snoke, and Knights of Ren. So many people looking to read articles about all these different possibilities of what they could do or mean and suddenly they are seen as these big important cogs in the story.

Frankly, I feel like they need to get away from the Skywalker family and just do something new. The franchise feels torn between trying to break off from Luke, Leia, and Han and trying to sustain itself on people's fond memories of the trio. Since last Jedi had plenty of callbacks to both episode V and VI, I'm hoping that IX can mostly stand on its own.

Saw it last night.

In my opinion, the main Star Wars movies lately have just seen too Disneyesque (go figure) and more like there directed at teens and little kids.

In my opinion Rogue One has been the best Star Wars movie to come out since the originals. It was more gritty, dramatic, and just had the overall feel of being a Star Wars movie. They nailed it.

There was just way too much going on in this new movie and too many significant things happened that werent treated as significant things. The death of Snoke, Luke's death, etc.

I HATED the casino part (such a waste of time) and Leih floating through space was just so dumb.

Like I said, this movie just seemed more fluff than anything else. Thank God for some of the better side plots because the main plot SUCKED. (ship running out of gas while being chased by the first order).

I agree.  At some point, you have to move on from the Skywalker bunch.....and Ren is still here, so there's that for the purists.

This movie, to me, is all about setting up the franchise to move forward.....and yes, I did not see the death of Snoke coming right there.  In fact, I found myself thinking Luke would show up to help Rey escape, and die there.  There were a lot of twists in the movie that I enjoyed.

As you noted, if they go into every single detail of these people, you're looking at a four hour run time.  It had the feel of moving the story forward, while throwing some nostalgia in there to acknowledge the past.  Carrie Fischer is dead, and the next installment was to be the one that featured her.  So, it will be interesting to see how that all plays out.  Maybe with that being the case, there are some loose ends here that are/were meant to be tied up in the next one.

In my mind, Empire will always be the standard....and very hard to live up to.

Maybe it's because outside of Obi Wan the duels were the only thing done well in the prequels, but I really wanted to see some lightsaber badassery between Luke and Kylo at the end.

That was such a let down. One minor light saber battle throughout the entire movie. Didnt even get to see Luke with a saber other than throw it in the trash.

Well, at this point who is left? Luke and Han are gone.

You have Chewy and Leih and Leih is going to be cooked in the next movie for sure (should have been this one). R2 and 3CPO are basically after thoughts at this point. You can include them in future movies but future movies should be about Ren, Finn, etc. Its time to move forward and do something new and fresh.

BTW, is it appropriate to actually call Ren a Jedi? I mean at this point isn't she just basically a telepathic person? I mean she knows nothing about the Jedi ways and had zero training.

It appears to me that they are more interested in the force than the religions surrounding it.....like the Sith and the Jedi.

As I read earlier, Episode IX was supposed to be "Leia's movie"....but she passed away after filming VIII.  Luke was to be the last Jedi....and the film served its purpose in that capacity...I think.  Chewy and the Falcon are still somewhat big parts of the series.  I wonder what the next one holds for them, and also hearing that Lando may make an appearance in IX.

Rey, and even the little kid at the end, are showing that the force is much more than Jedi or Sith....and Yoda kinda did that as well.

What bothered me the most is the lack of empathy, love the director had for the characters.

They were bullied during 2h30 and that dude burnt the whole saga down and bringed absolutely nothing new to the table.

A pile of ashes. The scorched Earth strategy.

Good luck for JJ Abrams to make something for Ep IX.
You can only be bothered by your own thoughts. You can only be p*ssed about your own life.

I liked it the second time, but I will never accept the Super Leia moment or the complete disregard for their own Disney era canon.

They should have written the trilogy at the same time

I swear that whole thing with the main ship being chased like that was something Spaceballs would have done as a parody  LOL

Also remember the ridiculousness of the story when you're expected to believe it all happens in the span of maybe 48 hours

Completely agree on Leia. That was some BS.

Maybe I'm just tired, but what did you mean by the bold?

They kept calling the resistance a "rebellion" but it's not. The First Order is an invading force.

The idea that the Resistance and Republic are one in the same. After the destruction of the Hosnian system, they make it seem like that small batch of the Resistance is all that's left. There should be Republic forces throughout the Galaxy that outnumber the First Order and can make a counterattack. Hell, the only thing that was destroyed was the Senate. The individual governments in all of the systems remain and their own military would remain as well.

They seem to change the timeline of the destruction of the temple and the events. Disney era canon established it as occurring no more than 5 years before the start of the Force Awakens when Kylo Ren was at least 25 years old. It was suggested that Luke had been gone for 2-5 years. We see the Knights of Ren involved in the attack and Kylo Ren in his full get up.  But in the Last Jedi, he appears to be a teen, not in his mid 20's, and Luke describes him as a boy. This makes far more sense for the story, but it's a big change.

Actually it made the point that there will never be a LAST Jedi, as there will always be those who are sensitive to the Force (or should I say have a high metachlorian count?).  I think that was the purpose of the little kid.  There will always be Jedi, you just have to know where to look.  And obviously Rey, being in possession of the ancient texts, will become the one to resurrect the group, although it will differ from the group of old.

That's one way of looking at it.  I see it as focusing more on light vs darkness....and the Force itself, instead of Jedi vs Sith in its truest form.  Those are religions centering around the force, and with the systemic ends of all the Skywalker affiliates, it just feels like they are moving away from Jedis and Siths to me.  I think the focus going forward will be on the force itself, not the disciplines associated with it.

I took it that the kid was more being influenced by the rebellion (or resistance) than anything related to the Jedi or the force. That was the same kid Finn and Rose interacted with. They kept saying that Leih and her group needed to be the "spark" that influences others to join the cause. The kid was clearly influenced by the resistance hence the logo on the ring. I dont think it had anything to do with him being influenced by the force or Jedi ways.

Kinda my thoughts as well.....and he just seemingly realized he had the force in him out of nowhere.

It had some of the best scenes of any Star Wars movie. Unfortunately it had a lot of crap as well.

Things I loved:
  • Kylo/Rey/Luke storyline
  • Kylo killing Snoke then the epic throne room battle that followed.
  • Luke standing up against the wall of walkers. Freaking epic shot.
  • Reys parents being nobodies
  • Adam Driver. Dude carried the movie.

I know two of the things I loved go against the grain. Personally I liked that Reys parents were nobodies, if only because the endless theories about her parents all basically said the same thing. I did like the theme of anybody can be a hero. I loved killing off Snoke. I would have liked to have his character explained a little more, but I'm excited to see Ren step into the role as the big bad.

Things I hated:
  • Princess Mary Poppins. We all know that scene. It was bad. Real bad.
  • Holdos "plan". Freaking stupid. Especially 2 seconds later when we find out the first order has anti-cloaking scans.
  • The forced humor. Poe on hold, Luke tossing the lightsaber away. Etc. It was just all bad and out of place.
  • Finn and Rose. Dear god that all could have been cut from the movie and nothing would have changed. Massive and annoying waste of time.
  • Phasma being basically pointless again.
  • Probably goes with point 3, but Luke milking those huge tits. Really could have lived without seeing that.

Ehhh not really there will always be force sensitive people but the JEDI were an order and the JEDI are all gone.

just because you are force sensitive doesn't mean your a jedi. jedi is the result of years of training and controlled emotion (they aren't necessary the good guys)

I agree with a lot of what you said. The Finn Rose story line was ********. Their journey to the casino was such a waste of time and so out of place.

The forced humor was OK in some spots (I actually though the little pengiun things were funny) and a little unnecessary in other spots. I thought when Luke chucked the lightsaber was ridiculous and almost an insult.
