The Defense is Bringing the Team Down
#1
I personally believe that we are capable of competing with the top teams in the NFL if our defense could be average at best... but my god they can't even do that.

I don't know whether it's a lack of pass rush sometimes or the missed tackles or what...

This defense looks soooo lost..

What are some trade/free agent acquisitions that could be made to patch some holes?

I'm thinking a Patrick Peterson trade could help the secondary massively and/or a Deonne Bucannon / Haason Reddick... Both are great coverage guys that are quick and we need that really badly.

I think the defense is what it is, we're going to give up points to damn near everybody an a good bit of them. The best we can hope for is a turnover here and there and a timely stop every now and then.

I don't know, I felt like I had such high expectations for the defense cause I thought they played not as bad last year..

Not sure what happened.

Not certain it will happen but have seen many of Bengals defenses start poorly and come together in second half of season.

Including some of Zimmer's defenses as well. But Austins schemes seem nonexistent at times and not certain he will tweak it in right direction.

Do not understand how we have a HC who is a defensive specialist and we are so bad at it. Bend but not break stuff has got to go.

I had some nay sayers hit my statement that the Bengals would have to score 30+ points to win and it has pretty much come true.

Cleveland, Denver, San Diego, Pittsburgh and Baltimore all averaging 20+ points per game.

New Orleans averaging 34.

Defensively the teams we have left are giving up the following points per game;

Oakland 31.1
Cleveland 26.3
New Orleans 26.1
Pittsburgh 24.6
Denver 24.3
Chargers 23.3
Baltimore 17.1

A defensive HC and we're one of if not the worst D in the NFL, just doesn't add up.

I was just going to mention this.  I don't have stats or the incentive to research but I believe Marvin was a good DC.  Not sure why that is.

Defense giving up those big plays hurts...

But they also gave us 3 Extra chances with the ball and a TD...  soooooooooo...  Its been hit or miss

keep in mind whos not on the field though.... Our Depth is being tested.

Can't give up TD's over 60 yards (2) when playing bend and don't break style. Bengals used to make teams grind, now it appears on 2d and 10 we give up 8 and 9 yard rushes. We look equally bad against run and pass.

I am not sure what they can do to fix it in 2018.

2024 may go on record as one of most underperforming teams in Bengal history. Bengal's FO has major work to do on defensive side of the ball. I say tag and trade Tee Higgins in 2025 to start with the rebuild.

Guys just seem lost in Austin's zone schemes.  They need to either simplify the defense or get everyone on the same page during the bye.

the defense has scored four touchdowns and are top 5 generating turnovers. Yes the yards and points are bad but if your going to hammer on negatives at least acknowledge the positives. all the while we have played many explosive offenses. we haven't been playing bills cardinals or 49ers. the worst offense we played was dolphins or colts and they are middle of the pack offenses by no means horrible.

No doubt, this team is doing well with turnovers and sacks. It just seems they can't make a play on 3rd, short or long. Yesterday Evans just missed knocking down the 4th down TD, we just missed knocking down the 2 point conversation and sacking him.

I dont think the defense is really that far from being a good unit. We have a linebacker problem mainly. And a scheme problem .. furthermore did we have a good defense in 05 ,no they were a opportunistic turnover defense. And that was looked to be our superbowl team. Patriots last year had a horrible defense.

If they could catch they’d have like 8 more interceptions than they do. Their hands are awful.

Jackson was Known as a ball hawk and good hands. He has dropped a lot of picks, some were not easy but like WR's with great hands were very catchable for a CB with his talent.

Defensive backfield looks lost out there for sure.

But the biggest problem was that the offense couldn't generate a 1st down for most of the 2nd half.   I think there were 5 straight 3 and outs.  How is a defense supposed to overcome that?

Seems like Tampa Bay came out in the 2nd half and decided that they'd stop the run and make Andy beat them with his arm.  Which he did eventually, but not until the last drive.

I think it's equally scheme flaws and poor execution.

There have been a numerous amount of times our defenders have been in position to make a play, whether for the ball or stops behind the LOS.

Missing tackles and whiffing on huge plays falls mostly on the players themselves.

Our current starting LBers have a lack of talent problem mostly.

The rest of the team however has no excuse for such poor individual play.

Time for players only meeting part 2.

The "Winston Gifts" can't be relied upon going forward.

So other than a LB problem and a scheme problem we are close? LOL. You sound like Mikey "We are only 1 or 2 players away"

Seriously one or two players can make a difference lol i know that goes against your guys motto always preaching its a team game. Stop the run and actually tackle the running back would be a huge step for us. You can do a lot when you stop the run..also even james rapien preaches this, nfl defenses arent stopping anybody these days its just not us. Its the way the league is. You guys only want a winning team if we are dominant in every area and beat teams down every week. Its not going to happen lol.. i point to 05 defense again we couldnt stop a nose bleed we had to rely on turnovers and a great offense, but damn that was a good team ill always remember.
