11 is a lot, but come Game 1, only the Punter is expected to be a starter - if he makes the team, Burton is a strong possibility.  Strong roster?

Ossai for sure. Johnson is a long shot for making this roster.

Could be 6 DE 4 LB. Keep Ossai over Heyward.

Wonder if traditional LBs gain or lose value on special teams with the new kick offs?

For context, the players from last year's roster that have already been or would be removed from the roster as part of this projection:

QB: AJ McCarron (released so he could play in another league)
RB: Joe Mixon (traded)
WR: Tyler Boyd (unsigned)
TE: Tanner Hudson, Mitchell Wilcox (signed elsewhere), Irv Smith Jr (Signed elsewhere)
OT: Jonah Williams (Signed elsewhere), D'Ante Smith
OG: Max Scharping (unsigned)
C: Trey Hill

DT: DJ Reader (signed elsewhere), Josh Tupou (unsigned), Jay Tufele
DE: Joseph Ossai
LB: Markus Bailey (unsigned), Devin Harper
CB: Jalen Davis, Chidobe Awuzie (signed elsewhere)
Safety: Nick Scott (cut), Tycen Anderson

ST: Brad Robbins (Good riddance)

Two changes I'd push back on would be cutting Joseph Ossai for Cedric Johnson and cutting Tycen Anderson for Daijahn Anthony. I am not one of these people that expect Ossai to break out this year, but I sincerely doubt they'd cut him for a 6th round rookie who is an athletic project.

Anderson, it may come down to health. If he gets injured for a 3rd year in a row, they might just cut bait on him, but I find it more likely they'd keep him on the roster and stash Anthony on the PS for a year.

All over Hudson will depend on All's health. I could see him starting on the PUP and Hudson making the roster for the first half of the season before being demoted to the practice squad unless he's having a breakout year.

I'd also be surprised if they rolled with just 9 OL. They may roll with just 3 safeties since Hill could step in if needed due to injury to allow that 10th offensive lineman, which would be a backup guard. But that's nit picking the 51st or 52nd player on the roster haha.

Overall, this rookie class will have significantly upgraded this roster in almost every position.

Ivey will start on PUP, I'd pencil in Allen there

I'm w/ u of Ossai. How much time does he need?

1 less LB (Heyward), 1 more OL (TBD)

Ossai will make the 53 or be traded, Johnson will be on the practice squad

I think everyone needs to take a deep dive into new undrafted punter.

He has a huge leg but lacks direction and often outkicks the coverage.

Long is great but need height and direction as well.

I get it Robbins had a bad rookie year, but I see him working his ass off to be better in 2024. He is also the holder for Field goals. Can the new punter do that as well?

Time will tell if Robbins loses his job.

I am so ready for 2024 season. I love pro football and hoping for a great Bengals year. Regardless, always remember it is a game and entertainment.

I think Evans has a good shot to stick because of return ability. But idk where his head is at. If he wants to continue his NFL career, it's make or break this year.

He is hanging on just at the edge of the roster. We will be looking very hard at making a claim during the final roster cut down no matter how he does. So he needs to have a solid showing this camp and preseason if he wants to stick around.

I agree about the punter. I tried to mix in some wishful thinking. I'm like 90% certain our 22 years running special teams coach will keep his hand picked punter from last year. He stuck with him last year when I was hoping he wouldn't. KC has now upgraded to the punt god. We will probably stick with our complacent 22 years on the job special teams coach's feelings.

I also have the homer in me saying Robbins has been training all offseason to improve his long punting game. He will win the job.

I don't think McNamara's coming in for anything but to give Robbins some friendly competition. They're not giving up on their pick of last year quite so easy imo. They never do.

Likewise, if I had to guess I'd say the plan is to PUP All. The man tore his ACL. He's got a long road back that doesn't even include learning how to be an NFLer. I think that pick was pure futures and they knew it, which inspired the double dip on McLachlan to keep any critics at bay. I guess time will tell but that's how I see it right now.

Do you really think ZT, and the FO give a darn about emotional no educated fan critics?

ZT loses his job if he makes bad decisions. Duke loses his job if he makes bad decision.

I am confident, critics are the last thing on their mind building a roster to compete.

As for the punter coming in, we have very little investment (dead cap money) in Robbins so he could be cut if the other guy is better.

Yeah, maybe they don't care about anyone but themselves. I won't get into that argument. But they did double-dip because All won't be ready. I firmly believe that and that's the more important point anyway. Zac isn't losing his job over the 194 pick, tho. And Duke isn't losing his job, period. We should know that by now lol

As for Robbins, unless he stinks up the joint they'll keep him. They don't cycle guys out on a whim. They never have. Partly because, well, you said it yourself: they don't wanna "lose their job." Coaches are naturally protective of their picks. In this case, if they keep Robbins no one'll ever know if McNamara would've been better. It would be speculation. Whereas if they cut Robbins, it'll hurt their draft record a little bit. Not enough to get fired, mind you, but hurt it nonetheless. So holding all things equal they'll keep the incumbent. And that's not me saying it or anything specific to Zac, Duke, Robbins, etc. That's just the operative norm around the league. Not my fault.

I would not be shocked to see Max Scharping back. We don't have anyone with his IOL versatility

I think Robbins improves this year. He couldnt possibly do worse than last year. It wouldnt surprise me to see Robbins win the job.

The Bengals might add a couple of guys to the roster after cuts are made so I would bet we see an additional player or two that isnt signed yet that will be taking spots from the guys currently listed.
