Irwin mostly made plays when he didnt get very many snaps and the defense did not care about him. Remember the bomb vs the Browns when they simply let him run? He did make a banger play on one last season.
I like TI to come in and make a catch. But he is too easily shut down if the defense knows he will be playing a multitude of snaps.

No singular player is at fault for that flat performance. The team just wasn't ready to play ball, and that falls on the coaching. Between soft training camps and contract melodrama, this team was anything but focused to play a live game versus an AFCN like opponent.
Eh, just because a guy didn't do his job on a previous play doesn't mean you get a pass for not doing your job on the next play.
If you think the team is soft and unfocused, then you have to do something to get their attention. If you can't make an example out of a career PS guy that you have minimal investment in that cost you 7 points in a one score game with piss poor ball security, then you're just a weak coach. By giving someone else his spot on the game day roster, or cutting/sending him back to the PS, you tell everyone else in the room that they'd better be in their P's and Q's or they're going to lose playing time, or maybe their job. And it isn't like we don't need another DT right now.

Outside of Chase we do not have guys that can break a tackle and get yards. Taking only what the defense gives you is not a good strategy if receivers cannot move the ball after the catch.
Hudson would have ended up with ~15-20 more yards and a TD had he not fumbled and also been able to catch that tipped ball. That would have been a good outing for him if he had (5 rec, ~40 yards, 1 TD).
He's looked about the most dynamic the Bengals have had at TE in the Taylor era, other than possibly Gesicki.
I would like to see McLachlan in a game though, so I'd be ok having Hudson or All inactive a couple games to see what McLachlan can show.
I didn't really get to see McLachlan in the preseason because I had no way to watch the games.
I agree also on Burton. The way the game was going, the Bengals should have tried to get him on the field more than 4 snaps. Use as a decoy if anything.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Found this from a year ago before the start of the season. Don't know if it was accurate: "Last year, every team that didn't play starters at all in preseason lost their week 1 game (including SB champion Rams). Do you feel this will effect us?"
Yes, the Rams are one of those teams that don't play their starters, and this is perhaps where Zac Taylor takes his inspiration. They also didn't this year and again lost their first game.
I think the better model for the Bengals is 3-time Super Bowl champion Andy Reid (4 if you count one as a assistant coach). He plays his starters, including Mahomes, in at least two preseason games and often considers doing it in a third game. Mahomes generally plays at least half a game in one of the preseason games, with the other starters, and limited snaps in another. Reid does this despite the fact that his teams are playing all the way to February the season before, unlike the Bengals who had a long off-season this year. Andy Reid defends doing so because he feels it is necessary to get ready for the speed and physicality of an actual game.
I think we seen enough of the Bengals poor starts. One win in the first two games and 10 losses. Yesterday the Bengals looked not ready against the Patriots who played their starters in all three preseason games.

Hudson proved why you don't let a QB determine roster spots. "Burrow likes him" isn't how this works.
We should be down to 4 TE's shortly.

Well said. Zac seemingly thinks he is Sean McVay. He is not.

McVay has an eidetic memory, Zac is not even close. Sean remembers plays from any game, he uses a mnemonic device. Zac got lucky with a healthier Joe Burrow back there.

I miss the typical old cadence for the preseason games with starters:
Game 1 - A couple series
Game 2 - One quarter
Game 3 - One half
I'd like to see that again to help get the Bengals more prepared. If it doesn't work for a couple years then I'm glad to abandon that strategy, but most teams used to do that for a reason.

Yes. He's been on like 4 teams in 5 years. Journeyman. Mistakes do happen. That one was costly.

Here's what I don't get though...
With Gesicki a Bengal, why did we see so much of Hudson anyway?
One would think Gesicki would be the receiving TE on the field unless injured and Hudson only getting backup receiving duty.
I haven't gone back to look at the replay, but were Hudson and Gesicki both out there in 12-personnel sets?
I wouldn't be so quick to drop Hudson personally, but I would be prioritizing Gesicki getting snaps.
Gesicki played only 18 offensive snaps - 35%.
He needs to be playing 30+ a game unless it's grind out the clock time running the ball.

Yeah he is definitely a 5 or 6 on the roster but he is still an NFL caliber player. He's much better suited when Tee and Chase are out there.

Great point. When Hudson, Irwin, Jones and even Iosivas, are 67% of your receiving playmakers, your offense will not be very dynamic.

The snap breakdown is below. Hudson got the least amount of the 4 tight ends with 9 snaps 18%, but obviously had the biggest donut moment of them all.

I'm not going to bash Hudson too much, he is normally very sure handed. It sucks, but it happens to everyone who plays.

The ball touched the turf, easy no catch.

I agree. Why the heck do people pay ludicrous prices to go to a pre-season game?

And Hudson still had the most receptions and tied for the most yards of any of the TEs.
I'm not going to pretend Hudson is a complete TE and deserves to be the starter, but he's more of a receiver than 2 of the other TEs (at least right now) that were active yesterday.

Nah Sunset, sorry man but it was pretty clear he lost control of it when he hit the ground.
