Gesicki Touchdown - NFL Apology

He jumps, catches the ball, lands, ball shifts then touches ground.....easy no catch.
It would'nt have been a catch in the middle of the field.

I'm not saying it was or wasn't. All I'm saying is they announced on NFL radio that the league office said the call on the field was correct and the replay call was wrong and is should have remained a touchdown. And they apologized to the Bengals. Now if you all want to think me and the others who heard it are just making it up, have at it.

Sorry, but no, it's not. It was mentioned by Lapham on his podcast, as well as the guys on Sirius NFL Radio. People that close to the teams and league don't just "make stuff up". If nothing has been written about it, it's likely because that sort of "apology" is likely in the form of a phone call rather than a written press release.

I'm over here tryna make a joke  Sad
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

I believe completely that it was said and that you and others heard it. In fact, someone posted a clip of Latham saying it, and I listened to his statement. Although it was all hearsay, along the lines of "I heard that the NFL league office apologized to the Bengals."

But it is a major, major call by the officials. It was the difference between a win and a loss. If the league actually apologized, there should be a public statement from either the league office or the Bengals front office. Without that, it is just hearsay. Was it a phone call? If so, was it officially from the league or just the opinion of someone in the league office. Can we trust the source of this information to the reporters. Why don't those reporting they heard this provide some detail on their source of this information? There is no way to trust these reports without providing more detail. Too many possibilities for erroneous reporting, playing the game of telephone, etc.

2 quick questions:

Do you think the refs ever blew a call and the league called the aggrieved team with a "we got it wrong"?

If you answered Yes, can you list any where you read a public statement?

It's quite possible the NFL called the team and apologized without having a news conference to announce it.

I've been on these boards for almost 20 years and I've NEVER seen more fans adamant that a Bengal dropped a pass.

What I need some to do:

Are people actually arguing that it was a TD now?

Nah, I haven't seen too many do that. I said it was obvious that he didn't maintain control "throughout the catch" but acknowledged it's quite possible that the play could have been considered dead once Mike was downed in the End Zone with possession. Most plays I see with "control throughout the catch" is the player catching in bounds and then falls/pushed out of bounds without being downed by an opponent in bounds.

But there is quite a concerted effort to say Laps/Sirius staff were lied to/made it up that the NFL admitted an officiating error and then dust off their online NFL referee degree to explain why.

Did they call? I have no idea and I don't care. I don have issue with folks saying G "dropped the pass". Those folks may be taking "crazy pills"  because it wasn't a dropped pass. and wasn't recognized as such.

As I said IDK why folks are so adamant he dropped it.

Right, not technically a dropped pass. Just a failure to finish the play.

You have a good point, there. I haven't seen the NFL office issue a public statement about officials making an error, unlike the NBA which does make that kind of report. I have seen plenty of public statements from NFL teams' front offices and coaches that they received an apology, as well as reports attributed to NFL teams' front offices. To whom or what are the reports about the Gesicki fumble attributed? No team official or coach to date has spoken up.

The reason it would be interesting to know whether or not this apology is true or not is because this was a huge overturn in the game. They are supposed to have conclusive evidence to overturn a call on the field. And it also would be good to know why the NFL decided this was or was not considered a fumble/TD.

I have almost always seen an article online about miscalled plays, maybe the Bengals like to keep everything hidden and that information gets publicized by the team and not the NFL (?). But it leaked to NFL Network, so no clue.

If we see any future publicized article where the NFL is talking about overturning a call from a prior game, we should consider why nothing was written about this play that had game changing consequences.

What would it help. If they Bengals announced something, it would just look like sour grapes from a losing team. If the league announced it, it just makes their referees look more inept than normal. They are not going to overturn the score. There is not going to be a news conference or public statement made, it serves no purpose.

I'm not saying anyone made it up, I'm saying the replay on NFL+ is clear as day it touched the ground without any control. IF the NFL apologized for the right call someone should be fired.

*sigh*

By the rulebook, it was not a catch.

Per Lap and someone on NFLN's show, the league apologized. This was presumably told to them by a source. Sources aren't right all the time. Sources get things wrong.

Good work on your research paper.

Do you really think citing a handful of cases that go back as far as 16 years supports your assertion?

Doing a basic ass search for "nfl apology for ball calls" and posting the webpage links is not exactly a research paper.

"Right, other than x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, and x, when has it ever been public that they admit they messed up?"

some of us just don't like the others of us, even though we all root for the same team. lol.

but yeah it's a regular occurrence to me to see NFL apologize for something, publicly, makes an ESPN article and make an ESPN short. Maybe it does happen behind closed  doors more often and we don't see it.

But does it matter? It can't change the outcome, and aren't all the NFL owners colluding anyway? Lol. I wonder if they actually care which team wins, it sometimes feel like the fans care more, which is odd. What if we were to say 95% of fans care more about winning a superbowl ring than the owner does.

Can't one of the local sports writers contact the NFL and ask if they issued an apology or not? It would be pretty easy to confirm
