However, this is the NFL.  They held the Pats to 16, and three of those were courtesy of Chuck Drizzle.

You hold the other team to 16, you should win.  Period

Not when you lose the time of possession by10 minutes and can’t throw the ball down the field.

I don’t want to see any passes by Burrow if the receiver is standing on the line of scrimmage. That receiver better be moving vertical when the pass arrives. Too many examples of 3 yard pass with no chance of advancing to a 1st down.

The D played well enough to win. I look forward to Jenkins being worked into the lineup. Jordan Battle has to get more reps somehow.

I was wondering if it would of been a mistake to bench Battle for Vonn. Battle wasn't the problem last year, it was Nick Scott and Dax
that were the problems at Safety. Jenkins was a great run stopper at Michigan, sure would be nice to have him out there.

couldn't get it done. Not targeting Chase more was a huge mistake as he was winning and getting separation on every play where
he was targeted. Moss was running the ball well and we went away from it, whether that was on Burrow, Zac or Pitcher or all 3...

We need to do what works and not go away from it. Less Shotgun, more under Center etc.

The Defense needs to tackle better, we were getting pressure besides Hubbard.
How many big plays did the defense make on Sunday? How many missed sacks did they miss? How many times did they let Jacoby get first downs on scrambles? How many tackles did we miss? All of this lead to demise of our team on Sunday along with a poor performance by the offense! Also the Patriots averaged 13.9 points per a game last season; so them scoring 16 is an offensive explosion for them.

Did I say it was good? No, I said it was good enough to win if our Offense could score.

Our defense has sucked for awhile, and only really ever been average at best, but this... Score 17 points.
I'm gonna break every record they've got. I'm tellin' you right now. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but it's goin' to get done.

They gave up 13 points. One of the field goals was directly associated with the jones fumble on the 20 yard line right after the half. They gave up legit 3 points in the second half and kept the offense in the game. They got the ball back to the offense at the end of the game to drive down and win the game.

Did they get run on a little bit and miss some tackles? Yes. But they were 10000% good enough to win the game Sunday.

No one is to blame for this loss other than the offense. You people just like to complain I swear.

LOL. Again. don't let the number of points they gave up against a team that MIGHT average 10-11 ppg. this season get in the way of logic, which, you're vastly short of here. If NE wanted to throw the ball another 15 times they easily could have and been successful but they did not need to as they controlled the clock easily and played "flip the field".

It was like holding somebody under water and just letting them come up for air a little bit at a time. Cinci. had good outside pressure a few times by Trey. That was it. ZERO interior inside push by tackles which is pretty important in sustaining a pass rush and continually gave up running room to probably the slowest QB in the NFL. Continually gave up the inside of the field to the WR's on the slant.

In you believe that not getting to the QB, missing tackles over and over and over, not being able to defend the same pass play presented over and over and over and not being able to stop a team from converting that you know is only running the ball then you really need to buy a book called Football 101.

This picture really sums up the Bengals pass rush. I think we’re cooked if Myles Murphy doesn’t pan out.

Defense been trash since Bates left

What Bates did for Lou and us not resigning Bates wasn’t just a bad money move to me

It honestly showed me that our FO is operating 100% on costs. Cause to let Bates go then next year let Reader walk tells me you are either cheap as hell or dumb as hell cause you didn’t realize those 2 were our anchors

So this brings us to next year….

Entering the season without a certified slot WR. To me that’s dumbass move number 3 that i would consider is big enough to bring up questions about our FO.

One thing i noticed immediately against the Patriots is Burrow had no bailout in the middle of the field at all. No one hunting holes in zones and If there was someone doing it Joe wasn’t throwing it so they must’ve not been getting that open. Slot WR is very important so the fact we labeled Gesicki as that guy and didn’t even target him much is beyond me

Fix the tackling. It's that simple. If they tackle well the rest is okay.

Still need more of a push rush. It can’t just be Trey. Rankins need to be much better, and Hubbard can’t keep playing almost 80% of the snaps.

It's a one man show out there. What's really upsetting is the Dline not staying in it's rush lanes.

With how much Cover 1 and cover 3 we play; you would think this front office would have priorized a player like Jessie. Also people forget that DJ was an effective pass rusher as well as run defender. So we Wil miss him dramatically.

Defense struggled with fundamentals for sure, but the offense did help them out by staying on the field.

The defense didn't help out the offense either and had a much easier matchup.

Lou's defense wasn't good before Bates left.

2019: 29th overall / 25th scoring / 26th sacks / 28th turnovers / 25th 3rd down
2020: 26th overall / 22nd scoring / 32nd sacks / 27th turnovers / 20th 3rd down
2021: 18th overall / 17th scoring / 12th sacks / 17th turnovers / 22nd 3rd down
2022: 16th overall / 6th scoring / 29th sacks / 11th turnovers / 20th 3rd down
2023: 31st overall / 21st scoring / 18th sacks / 12th turnovers / 22nd 3rd down

Bates wasn't some magical juice. He had an amazing 2021 postseason which made people forget that he wasn't good that season. We had a below average defense (like we almost always do under Lou), Bates allowed a 122 QB Rating in coverage and PFF had him graded (if you put any stock in it) at 56.1... he just had an amazing postseason so we forget that he and the defense had spent the previous 18 weeks being below average.

We had a good 2021 postseason run and a good (not great) 2022 defense. Out of 5 years. Those are the outliers, not what we currently are without Bates.

Last year we were know to come out firing after halftime. The D held NE to 3 straight 3 and outs to start the 2nd half and during that time period the Pats still outscored us 3-0.

I don't think we've "talked enough" about the D's "poor" performance, because it wasn't. The O crapped the bed.

Something tells me (unfortunately) that we will have plenty of opportunities to attack the D, but let's not focus on the D for what it was never supposed to be (a top 10 defense) when we were all sold we just needed a mid of the pack D to win big with this "offense".

The issue is the Offense. Are we a defensive team or an offense driven team? We were sold with the talent on Offense that this was an Offensive driven team. The D has carried this Offense for years, the Offense has never repaid them for all the times they've bailed them out over the championship runs, especially when they needed the time and room to adjust to the talent that was lost on that side of the ball over the last couple of years.

I want dominant D (when is the last time we've seen a shutout? 3 points scored?) like the rest of us. But that was never how this team was built.
