Im not sure if Lou is the answer at DC right now but he certainly doesnt have the talent on defense other teams do. People keep saying he's bad and maybe he is but there is a lack of talent on this defense that would be hard for any DC to overcome.
It's tough to put all this on Lou. But, his job is to get the best out of his players and coach them up. Make them better. Has he done so? I don't think so.

The Bengals are good at drafting QB, receivers and running backs. They have no clue on OL, DL, Linebackers, CB’s, etc.
Pittsburgh hasn’t had a QB for couple years and yet they still finish above .500.
This front office scouting department is a joke, and has no clue how to judge talent, and pick players that fit into their scheme. I take that back, I guess you have to have a defensive scheme first, before you can draft players to fit in.
Defense will finish near the bottom again. This defense plan didn’t work last year and it’s not working this year. Time to try something different.

We have a pretty solid Linebacker corp. Wilson, Pratt, ADG... they are not the problem.

I read now on here that our secondary is slow and out of position. I know I remember also reading here just a year or two ago that we have or drafted DB's that have blazing speed bragging about their 40 times at the combine. Where is all this speed now? I guess 4.3 times doesn't matter much if you are 10 yards off the ball or out of position or don't tackle well. In rebuild mode yet again.

The top safeties make up the slowest safety room in the NFL. Hilton is also slow.
CTB is very fast, but has seemingly fallen into trying to win his way instead of utilizing proper technique.
Dax is even faster but is/was learning a new position.
Turner is very fast but seemingly has a ways to go. I could beat him on a crossing route.

the corners would look a lot better if they werent burdened by the worst pass rush

The defense is dragging down the mentality of the team. Both Burrow and Chase are leaders in their league categories. Yet have to answer why they are losing. It is the defenses fault and at this point it has gotten very old and repetitive.

Time for Lou and Duke to sit down with the media and explain themselves.

this is on duke and the front office. they missed completely with reloading the d-line in the draft. Ossai being worthless is a huge gut punch. Even without the injuries to Rankins and bj hill, the depth is trash. Zac carter is a tremendously bad pick. Myles Murphy has been injured, and his ceiling is as a great run stuffer.
the whole thing is a mess.

And that is why the Bengals are not a playoff caliber team consistently. Either the O is very good or the D is very good but they can't seem to have both at the same time over decades of trying. The SB year they were kind of lucky with the patch together O line they had. Losing Bates now looks huge but they can't overcome that with another quality player? And Reader? Other teams seem to overcome losing top players but here, it is usually a disaster.
I could be totally wrong but after decades of new coaches, head coaches, position coaches, players coming and going the one aspect that never changes is the front office, ownership and their questionable decisions on team management. I wish Katy or whoever is really in charge of final decisions would hire a REAL NFL GM, hand him the keys to the team and tell him to bring me a Super Bowl win. It won't happen but it is fun to dream. Money be damned. I really wonder what influence Mike Brown has now at his age.

It is is very disappointing that our hopes rest upon a man dying and his daughter selling the team to an owner who is willing to pay what it takes to win.
