A potential big future problem
#1
So Trey Hendrickson demanded a trade this offseason. https://www.nfl.com/news/defensive-end-trey-hendrickson-requests-trade-from-bengals-team-says-it-won-t-move-him

He's leading the NFL in sacks now. He has 1 more year on his contract. Pretty obvious the Bengals need to pay him and extend him.

Ja'Marr Chase has 1 year left on his contract. They were unable to work out an extension this offseason. His value likely went up.

Tee Higgins is under the franchise tag this year.

This is 3 of the top 5 players on the team.

These guys are going to want a lot of guaranteed money, and I think it's going to be hard for the Bengals to pay that.

Thoughts...

I think you'll see Ja'marr go after a large contract, and the Bengals have to sign him this off season.  Tee will not be a Bengal next season.  He'll leave as a FA.  Trey Hendrickson will get resigned to a larger contract as well.

The Bengals need to have a successful 2025 because of the contract with the city/county, season ticket holders, and sponsors.

I think the P&G sponsorship this year will really help with those contracts and signing bonuses as well.

It would have been nice to see the Bengals extend both of those guys prior to this season, since it was obvious that they had no intention of signing Higgins to a long term deal. With two years remaining on each of Chase and Hendrickson's contracts, it would have given an extra year to spread that guaranteed money over and ease the burden somewhat.

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

They should sign Chase and give Tee one more try as him missing games again this year does hurt his value.

I am thinking the same. Ja'Marr will get his, same with Trey, Tee will go else where and play half the games for another team. Hopefully
the Procter and Gamble sponsorship will help because Ja'Marr will without a doubt be the highest paid WR and Trey will be up there as
far as Ends go.

Yep, the FO screwed the pooch and will have to pay big time for it, at least with Chase. Trey couldn't get extended last Offseason as his
deal didn't allow it. That was why it was so stupid of him and his agent to demand to be paid when they did right before the Draft.

Trey could get a big contract elsewhere and have a better chance of team success. Imagine the damage he could do on a team with even just an above average DE on the other side. He is dominating when the rest of the defense is steamy hot garbage.

And playing against LT's, the best pass protectors on NFL OL's. What Trey is doing as a pass rusher is pretty wild honestly.

Don't know if he can line up on the other side of the line like other pass rushers do and move around. Nick Bosa for example moves to
both sides all the time to get the best matchup.

They get 400 million from the league annually.

They are fine.

The issue doesn't seem to be the 'large contract' part. They supposedly agreed on the money.

It was the guaranteed portion and when the payments happened. ie Structure of the contract. I think that's going to be hard to work out without the Bengals coming off of their stance.

As a rule of thumb... I'm totally against extending guys over 30. I'll make an exception for the top of the top elite. Trey Hendrickson isn't that. We got the best years of his career, and it's best to be a year too early than a year too late.
I'm gonna break every record they've got. I'm tellin' you right now. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but it's goin' to get done.

I'd be all for giving him like a massive raise for next year, but I agree that I don't really want to be tied to him with a large amount of guaranteed money for his age 32 and 33 seasons which is likely what any extension would entail. It's tough because without him we have no pass rush, and he's a great pass rusher, but once a player is in their 30s you risk them just absolutely falling off a cliff without much notice.

I think ultimately I would see if a $5-6m raise to $21-22m in cash (so he'd only be $3.5-4.5m more of a cap hit than he is in 2024) in 2025 would make him happy. If it doesn't, I think you trade him to an NFC team who thinks they're a pass rusher away and is willing to pay out the nose for him.
