Stupid Dead Cat Bounce
#41
(12-16-2024, 12:25 PM)Nepa Wrote: It's not a Dead-Cat Bounce because the Bengals still have a shot at the playoffs with three games to play: Colts and Dolphins lose 1 game of the next three, Broncos lose all three (one against the Bengals, one against KC, and one against the Chargers), and the Bengals win out (Browns, Broncos, and Steelers -- who may be sitting their starters for the last game). This is actually possible. And if the Bengals get in the playoffs, anything is possible.

Even if they were out of it, we have three players leading their positions: Burrow, Chase, and Hendrickson. It's just flat-out joy to watch them play football and root for them to lead the league.

And the Bengals have drafted high throughout their history and done generally very poor at it. Look at the draft where they selected John Ross and who they passed on that year (2017). Steelers have had 21 straight non-losing season, so they generally draft late, and still are leading the division this year, and draft well (they took TJ Watt with the 30th pick in the draft the Bengals selected Ross 9th). The Chiefs always draft late and find gems. So, after over 50 years of rooting for the Bengals, its hard to start look forward to the draft in place of the current enjoyment of the games.

If the bengals sneak in as a 7 seed, do you think either buffalo or KC would be excited? I’d be interested in what a potential O/U would need to be set at for Buffalo especially. Josh Allen can turn the ball over at times. I don’t think this team can make any real run in the playoffs, if they snuck in, but boy oh boy could a bengals/bills game be fireworks.

I hope everything plays out where the chiefs need the week 18 win for the bye, AND the Steelers need a win to win the AFCN. If the bengals want to be in the playoffs, I would want them to beat the best possible version of the broncos and Steelers to get there.

The last two games (Denver, at Pitt) are the toughest. If we lose both, we'll slide back down the standings a bit.

I believe we have gone from 10th to 13th with the two wins. Guys like Hunter (WR/CB), Graham (DT), Johnson (CB), and Carter (Edge) were always  extremely unlikely to drop to 10th anyway.

Starks (S) might be the only real home run guy we play our way out of drafting if we continue to win, and even that is debatable.

The rest of the top 10-12 in my view are guys who:

1) Are not HR prospects (Williams, OLB)

2) At positions we probably won't use a pick on anyway. Sanders & Ward are QBs. McMillan at WR (assuming Tee is back). Banks is an OT. So is Campbell, but a position switch to G is possible, which makes him an iffier prospect.

That is 11 guys. We pick 13th currently. The guys in the next tier are pretty close talent wise, and we still we have close to the pick of the litter:

12. Walker, LB/Edge
13. Harmon, DT/Edge
14. Nolen, DT
15. Grant, DT/NT
16. Revel, CB
17. Warren, TE
18. Loveland, TE
19. Scourton, DE

For me, thise 8 guys are our target list. And always have been, barring a top guy (Starks, Graham, Johnson) falling into our laps. Unless you want to go LT and cut OBJ (saves $7 mil after 6/1).

I share your frustration at someclevel. But if we'd have lost to Dallas, we'd be 11th. Not a big difference.

And frankly, I don't want this team giving up until we are out. And we can still learn info about hiw to proceed next year on various guys from here. High paid vers like Rankins, Cappa, Stone, Hubbard, Pratt, Hilton, and Gesicki. Plus younger guys like Battle, Murphy, Newton, and Lee. Even other vets like ADG & Hudson, Ossai, & D. Sample.

Buffalo just gave up 40 points in back to back games, and they sit #2 in the conference.

Herm, I'm sorry to have to drag you out of semi-retirement, but you're needed once again on this board because you, sir, said it first and best.

Not sure if anyone caught this, but towards the end of the game the camera went to Burrow sitting on the sideline and he appeared to be having a heated discussion with Zac.  It only lasted 2 seconds at most as they cut away quick.  A few seconds later they showed Zac on the sideline not looking happy.  Could be anything, but I thought it was interesting.

Yeah, there was quite the speculation in the game day thread about what Joe was telling Zac.  It could have been anything from Joe questioning Zac's coaching acumen to him complaining about his Secret Santa duties.  Maybe they were discussing the supposed dust-up between Mike and one of his grandkids that had so many here talking.

Zach used up all of the blueberry syrup at the team breakfast. Joe has told him multiple times before that it is supposed to be for him; it is in his contract. Yet, Zach time and time again uses up all of the blueberry syrup. Sources tell me that Joe had to settle for boysenberry. The anger was understandable.

We have whiffed early round picks @ receiver in Jones and Burton right now and we still cooking.

I’ve already said numerous times I think Pollack and Lou are gone. And there’s plenty to complain about offensively. We have two of the worst guards in the entire league. Don’t let Joe pulling a Houdini act 3-4 times a game for big plays, or Chase Brown making guys miss tackles let it get twisted.

When you consider the brown family net worth at over 4 billion for the franchise alone....hiring a GM and 6 scouts is like you taking me to McDonalds and spending 10 bucks on a hambutger and fries...its not money...its stubborness and hopefully this will change

I hope we win out. I doubt we make the playoffs, but you never know and I don't care about the draft position. What I DO hate is losing.

I hope we put the smack down on the Browns.

I'd love to win out and hand the Browns, Broncos, and Squeelers big fat L's

And I don't think moving down a couple notches in draft is going to alter things much. We're not getting a top draft pick any way you slice it up.

They should make those changes. I think Pollack is an easy move.

I think Zac will be loyal to Lou, but I don't know.

They're going to realize, I hope, they have to do something to correct this crappy defense and save face with the fans. I'd venture to say Lou is as good as gone.

I think it would be really tough to tell Joe and Jamarr that they're supposed to lose.  I don't think you want players that accept that in any circumstance.
Additionally, I think it would hurt the players that you're trying to develop by setting them up to fail.

I understand the whole Tanking thing, but my mind doesn't accept it.
However, I have been known to throw a game of pool with my son from time to time.   Tongue  He hates to lose even more than I do.

The only ones that want to lose are some of the absolute freakin' idiots in this thread. Not one player wants to lose even though some of these players look lethargic.
You got prideful players, players playing for stats, playing for bonuses and several playing to remain on the team.
