Tee vs a NEW D
#61
Burrow, Chase, and Tee hopefully can work it out where they can keep all. They will need to. No guarantee that the D will be better no matter what you do. Hard to be worse, real hard. Can't IMO risk downgrading the O while no full guarantee with the D. Do your best to fix it. They overcame insane challenges this year to even get this far and really only a few wild plays away from this not being a hope to be in the playoffs with arguably the worst D in the league. I mean what did we even just watch this offense do tonight? Mind blowing. Joe has 100% earned MVP regardless of record.

No because most teams sign their good young players. I would be behind Tee walking if Jessie Bates was on the roster but there's no one to take that money.

The Bengals are at a point where it's sign Tee and Chase or going for lesser talent in Free Agency. Not a good choice.

Ja'Marr Chase is going to get a mountain of cash. Hendrickson is going to want a big extension or to be traded. Someone is going to offer Tee a pile of cash and we'd have to match or beat it.

We can try to move money around to maintain the status quo based off nostalgia and fandom, or we can actually make real needed changes.

I don't know that a team offers him a huge deal because of the injuries.

This is his 5th season. Guys like AJ Green started to slow down at this point in their career.

Yep. And we see when our good players leave how long...and what cost it takes to replace them.

Tee leaves and we're spending a 1st or 2nd on a wr. Now if Burton looked like a capable #2, it's a different story.

If we had even a league average defense we're 12-5 this year at minimum. Maybe 13 or 14 wins.

He made himself some money today. It'll all be about how hard he tries to hit the Bengals up for. Problem is, the Defense is still very, very bad.

At minimum, they need a CB. There's a ton in free agency. A guy like Carlton Davis would be a good veteran.

Get a Guard like Will Fries.

At DI, look for guys like Milton Williams.

Notice these aren't the biggest names so we can afford them.

Calvin Ridley was given 4yr/$92m this offseason while heading into his age 30 season.

Every reason why people want to pay and keep Tee here (he IS a good receiver) is the same reasons some desperate team will offer him too much.

Heck, the Broncos could use a WR and Tee just had a big game against them. They have $89m in dead cap this year, but next year they'll have cap space again to actually sign FAs and they have a rookie contract QB who will have a $4.2m cap hit next year.... the Patriots need a WR and have >$130m in cap space next year. Same with the Raiders who haver >$110m in cap space next year.

I hope Tee is happy wherever he goes and does well against everyone but us... but if he goes to KC, he's dead to me. Lol

It seems after the game against the Broncos we need Tee Higgins AND a new defense.

I wouldn’t call it nostalgia considering Tee is only 25 years old and still very good. I can understand the sentiment of not wanting to tie up that much money in 2 WR’s (fair), but keeping a player of Tee’s caliber is also pretty easy to get behind.

I was wrong about being fine with letting Bates walk and man it would SUCK if Tee goes somewhere else and balls out and we use that money on a bunch of Rankins and Stone’s.

Can we really do without Tee???  Let's face it, he is a game changer.  Still, if Joe needs more time and protection then please, Mikey, get some All-Pro lineman to protect  him. If he has all day, most of us here could get open enough.

Tough call. If you are GM, what would you do?

With wasting this year of Burrow and Co. Hopefully the FO realizes that this is the time franchises wait and hope for and it's time to go all in and figure out the future when you get there.

All I can say to Joe and Ja'Marr when they talk about resigning Tee "new rules say they can put their money where their mouth is". If they want to stay together new ownership rules make it possible.

I do THINK so. Would I prefer to have him on the team? Absolutely. Issue is Chase needs and deserves to get paid. We have our best defender previously asking to be traded and likely wanting more money and the need to pay some body to actually play defense. 100% is about the money/cap.

Here's the pickle:

You can't pay Tee and Chase

You must pay Chase

Chase is better w/ Tee

I've been all over the place about paying or not paying Tee. Currently, I'm at:

This debate assumes that they'll use Tees money to sign quality defensive guys. The reality is that some of it will go to another wr.

For the SB run that people seem dead set on keeping everyone together to keep trying to run it back despite diminishing returns every year.

If we're going to be operating from an assumption of "we'll just use the money on shitty FAs" then we should just forfeit 2025 in advance rather than bother trying.

And, IF you don't pay Tee, you need a #2 either via draft or free agency.

Plus, they let Boyd go so there were savings there.
