In most other organizations, that would be the case. But not the Bengals. His role was to develop the QB we would draft his second year.

Callahan ran the offense and Lou the defense. I don't feel that he would have the ultimate say in the DC hiring.

Shouldn't he be overruled if there is a better candidate available? Whether consciously or not, he might allow factors like job security affect his judgment. If you put a gun to my head and made me choose between a Robert Saleh or some random guy who is friends with ZT and no accomplishment to speak of, I know which one I'm choosing.

The talk of Lewis is amusing. I had thought for some time that he would be one of the better DCs if he were to swallow his pride and pursue a coordinator job. It would make a lot more sense for just about any team other than the Bengals IMO. Awkward might be an understatement to describe a former HC coming back with an entirely different chain of command, players, etc.

No way it's Marvin.  Can't see Zac asking for that.  Also don't thing ownership is savage enough to let ZT know he's on the hot seat by installing Lewis.  It's well known that Mike loved Marvin as a HC.  They practically had to pry him from that job with a crowbar.  If he's in the stadium, he's a threat to Zac's job security.  3-1 in September?  Gee who can we install if we fire Zac midseason?

If Marvin comes back it would be to become the GM of the Bengals.

Belichick is a HoF coach, but he sure wasn't producing many quality coaches for the rest of the league.

Eberflus wouldn't be a bad hire.

Probably right that being under the Belichick tree isn't even a good thing lol

Please no to the 2 that we know were interviewed. Would prefer Eberflus the most of anyone and this is before they said they weren't going to
interview Saleh or Allen. Eberflus makes sense as he has coached a 4-3 Defense and did well in doing so.

I wouldn't be surprised if Saleh never gets another job in the league. Talk about not being able to read a room.

I'm not saying I want Marvin for the good of the team.... I'm saying I want Marvin for the good of my own, selfish entertainment.

Why would he never get another job? I have never heard such a harsh take on Saleh. The 49ers just interviewed him. Most expect him to be offered his old job back. I just checked defensive rankings from 2017 through 2020 when he was DC. The Bengals defense was ranked marginally better than the 49ers in 2017 when he took over. Since then? Yipes. Elite rankings vs. bottom of the barrel.

We could only hope. And I'm not joking. I think that he would actually be pretty good in that area. Maybe they could bring him in as the Chief of scouting for starters?

As long as someone else drafts linebackers.

If you want to look at years 2017 to 2020 look at how many All Pros and Pro Bowlers Saleh had to work with vs how many All Pros and Pro Bowlers were on the Bengals defense those years.  Its much easier to have great defenses when you have a team loaded with talent.   Saleh benefited from the talent the 49ers organization surrounded him with.    What would he do with lesser talent like the Bengals have?  I dont know.   Im just pointing out San Francisco gave him a lot of talent to work with so the comparison is a little hard to make.

I think if he wanted a front office job of any kind he could get it. Especially, if Duke were to resign. I think he could be our Pat Riely as an executive.

Awuzie played at an all-pro level for a bit, Reader was pro bowl tier, Hilton has been ranked near the top for nickel CBs, Hendrickson has had superb seasons...the Bengals had players who could play on defense. It looks to my eyes like they squandered their draft capital and had a DC who could only be good if he stuck to his formula. I'm sure there's more that can be learned and said about Saleh, but you can't take away what his defenses have done. Both the 9ers and Jets have had some eye popping performances under his tutelage. The Jets had great stats with their front 4. Doesn't being able to perform well with good players count for anything?

Awuzie is not and has never been Pro Bowl caliber.   Reader while being a great run stopping DT is not great at getting to the QB and is not Pro Bowl level.  Neither is Hilton.  Lou took the defense to the Super Bowl with two Pro Bowl caliber players, 2 or 3 good players and the rest JAGs.  He also had the #6 scoring defense in the NFL with this talent.   Lou hasnt had a bunch of talent to work with.  You start losing some of the better players you do have in Bates, Reader, Awuzie -since you listed him, what do you think is going to happen to the defense?

Like I said before, if the issue with the defense was Lou being stuck to his formula or not being able to "coach up" all these draft picks, bring in Saleh or some other DC and keep these same guys we currently have and see how great the defense is next year.   I think we all better however that isnt going to happen.    You will see some guys cut, free agents signed and high draft picks being spent on defense because the current talent isnt there on defense.

Chido was on his way to an All-Pro season in 2022 before his injury. He was the best man corner in the league.
