New DC hired?

I know people are mixed on Golden since it's viewed as the same old thing, but there is another long term possibility on this.
Multiple local reporters have said these new coach hires are Zac's decisions. If these hires don't work, and the team falters again, then Zac is most likely gone. I don't think we'll see Marvin Lewis style loyalty anymore, and the FO won't want to waste players like Burrow and Chase.
You can always trust an dishonest man to be dishonest. Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to look out for.

So, your hope is Zac hires a dud so he will be fired. Did I sum it up well? I hope he hires the best DC in the 2025 NFL season and behind and he helps Burrow, Chase, Trey, Mike Brown and ZT win the Super Bowl. 2024 may go on record as one of most underperforming teams in Bengal history. Bengal's FO has major work to do on defensive side of the ball. I say tag and trade Tee Higgins in 2025 to start with the rebuild.

Golden was golden for Dame and turned their defense into one of the best in the nation!
(See what I did there? ) I love the hire because he stepped into the Notre Dame job with high expectations at the job and he succeeded. He has had top defenses in the nation in college, so let's just hope that he can have the mind to succeed in the NFL Facts don't care about your feelings. BIG THANKS to Holic for creating that gif!

I really hope it works out with him as the Bengals D coordinator. The Buckeyes beat 6 of the other 11 teams that made the playoffs this season so they are legit. Can’t judge Golden on that game as they were facing a very good QB, 2 all American RBs and a 19 year old who could be a top WR in the NFL right now.

Assuming we wind up with Golden what are the implications for the defense? As in what will the scheme be?
For example Lou liked playing a 2 LB base. Does Golden? Or does he favor 3 or 4? What about Man vs Zone? If Man is it Press Man? These questions will radically affect our Free Agency and draft approaches.

The fact that ND even got to the Championship game says all you need to know about Golden as a DC. At least in the collegiate level, he is very good.

It affects many aspects of the game including what types of players a team has and what their job is on the field. Players that can think and tackle is another aspect of coaching which is very important but acting like scheme means nothing is kinda strange. Probably the two biggest issues with the defense this last season were tackling and (yes) scheme - as in the players were mismatched to what Lou was trying to do. One reason Lou needed to go was it took him 12 games to react to the players not being able to execute his scheme and simplifying it when it was obvious after maybe 2-3 games. And if it is Golden his scheme he plans to run will impact how we approach both Free Agency and the draft defensively.

Kid is something else. 15 TD’s as a true freshman is insane.

I really think that you might be overthinking this whole "scheme" item. Golden runs a version of a 4-3, just like most modern football coaches. What is more important is that fundamentals like proper tackling are emphasized over superfluous things like stripping the ball and laying "atomic shoulders". The goal is to put the man on the ground, if you force a fumble in the process, great. If you're focusing your intent on getting the ball and not the man, not so good. Golden is aggressive, which I like, but we really need to improve our secondary if he's going to stay with his man coverage and leave them in the secondary on islands.
Our defensive line was average in pass rush, but that will need to improve if we're going to leave our secondary out there on their own. It'll be interesting to see what direction Golden goes if he ends up being the hire. Facts don't care about your feelings. BIG THANKS to Holic for creating that gif!

(9 hours ago)ERIC1 Wrote: lol@ scheme..we need players that can think, tackle and hustle So then you just take the best players you can get, throw them on the field and say, "ok, go out there and think, tackle and hustle" with no direction or responsibilities? That's exactly what you're saying. Just get some guys that can do those things because it doesn't matter if they need to know who rushes, who drops, who covers, who shows blitz and drops off, who blitzes, whether it's man or zone, what cover scheme does the back end play, etc etc. You saying scheme shmeem, is literally one of the most ignorant things someone can say when talking about putting 11 guys on the field and expecting them to compete and succeed. Absolutely outrageous, with zero awareness or any semblance of reality. "The measure of a man's intelligence can be seen in the length of his argument."
