I see the best DT's in the league and it appears most not a top 15 draft pick took time to develop. In some cases years.
Chris Jones - 37th pick in 2016 by Chiefs, did not start as a rookie every game (11/16), year 2 7/16. He did not break out until year 3 and now arguably best DT in football.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Jones_(defensive_tackle,_born_1994)
Q. Williams - 3rd overall pick. Started 9 of 13 games, had 2.5 sacks, year 2 13/13 had 7 sacks, year 3 13/13 had 6 sacks
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quinnen_Williams
The point is how many DT's have come in as rookies or even in year 2 and made pro bowls or dominated?
Is it realistic to expect a late 2nd round or 3 round pick to excel as a rookie?
Where would a Q. Williams or Chris Jones start as a Bengal?
Who in the 2025 draft resembles a similar skill set to Chris Jones when he came out of college? Would you have guessed Chris Jones in 3 years at Miss. State had these sack totals?

You just have to hit on picks with guys who have huge upside and give them a little time to develop.

Just like Chase, there is just no way to replace Treys production.
Overpaid perhaps if his production falters however inflation hits hard and fast in the NFL so someone not as good is likely to make more in 2027.

I feel like it's less "hitting" the "good pick" and more identifying the player with the specific skill set that fits how your particular DL likes to operate. Every year it seems we see prospects who had "huge upside", yet they fail to launch with their drafted team. The communication connection between Scouting and Coaching means much more than many want to admit.

I agree in the aspect that Trey has played above his paygrade for a few years and should be rewarded for that. I'm uncertain as to the team guaranteeing the reward past an extra year or two, as future production for a player his age is never guaranteed.
Edit, not only has the team seemingly failed to draft Hubbard's next in line, they have absolutely no one to take over for Trey Hendrickson should something happen to him.

I remember in Murphy's rookie season he worked with Hendrickson a lot. Not sure if he was to replace Trey or not, but so far it hasn't worked out for Murphy.

I'd look at giving Trey a 2 year extension no doubt, but if he isn't willing to bite then I would trade him for no less than a 1st and 3rd this year, and look to fill his spot through FA. I'm trusting Golden can fix this defense.

Lets be honest , other teams with top D ends are in same boat take Crosby, Garrett, Parsons off those teams who do they have?

I dunno, but all of those teams had more sacks than our defense. So there must be something.

Didn't the Raiders sign the "big ticket" 3T on the market, formerly of Miami last offseason? Seems like they for sure have more than just Crosby. The Browns picked up Tomlinson to help on the inside, and drafted Mike Hall Jr. for the future. Not sure what you're getting at with teams with a high sack DE not having anyone else to play with them.

Wilkins got injured last season after 4 playing games for the Raiders!

Yes, I remember that. However, it does not dismiss the fact that LV invested a lot of money to supplement Crosby as their only sack getter.

I was loud on the board about going after Christian Wilkinson. He got hurt so who knows what would have been. But he was an upgrade over reader. Not a downgrade like the clown we got. So many on this board said rankins would generate so much pressure and that’s what we needed. He was average on the Texans and he’s awful for the bengals.

Always shy away from guys who have sudden massive career years conveniently in their contract years that they've never come close to prior. Doubly so if they are a 300+ lb guy.
4yr/$110m is a silly amount of money for a guy in his age 29 season that a year prior to FA had never reached 5.0 sacks before, and now he's going into his age 30 season with a $33.5m cap hit this year, currently the 19th highest in 2025 of ALL players regardless of position in the NFL, and 5th highest among all non-QBs with 2 of the non-QBs ahead of him expected to be cut this offseason.

He doesn't even play NT, so would have been a BJ Hill replacement.

Sure but he would have brought more value to the team compared to what reader would have brought. Of course, in my opinion.

Eh, maybe. Sure, just like the Raiders, the Bengals would have earned a little more publicity for signing one of the "hot names" that were available in a limited market. But how well did that work out for LV after paying him all that money and having him only play what, 5 games? I just don't think that it's worth it to pay people huge money off a lone "breakout" season. Aside from 2023, Wilkins stats are very BJ Hill like.

In general I agree, but that 2020 season was the only pelt that Hendrickson had on his wall at the time. I was definitely unsure about him at the time.

Yep. I thought it was no big deal as a signing. Thought he was a product of the players around him.
