True enough..But we could shed a couple guys this year, post draft, that gives us some more space (Volson, Stone, Pratt).

Typically you see this when we have a ton of picks.

It'll be easy to fit 6 players on the roster without major cuts.

Good point.

They have added Morgan Moses ($4.5m), Wes Schweitzer (?) and Garrett Bradbury (2 years $12m) so they have made moves but for combined for less than they’ve thrown at Milton Williams for a year.

It isn't a matter of fit. It is a matter of management. 

Say we sign Hernandez/Scherff/Risner and Donovan Jackson or Zabel or Conerly falls in our lap at 49. Then you have the pick and the FA starting. Patrick as the prinary backup. And Ford. Do you wanna pay Volson $4 mil to be the #4/5 G. Not counting Karras? I wouldn't. Let Lee or Kirkland or Stueber do it and try to upgrade another spot. 

Same thing at S. Say we draft Starks or Emmanwori or Watts. Do we want to pay Stone $8 mil to becthe #3 safery? We could cut him, pay a vet like Simmons, and have $$ left over for Trey or another FA. 

Ditto at LB. If Walker falls in our laps, or Campbell, and we are mainly playing 2 LBs, is it worth paying Pratt $8 mil to be a backup? Would he throw a fit? Wilson, pick, Burks + another FA looks better to me. Especially if we can get something for him.

I mean, cutting Stueber or Anderson/Anthony or Njongmeta makes more sense in terms of the pecking order. But letting goe of the higher earners allows a 2 for 1. And like you said, we havexa lot of holes and only 6 picks.

I typically don't pay much attention to the proposed trade articles that the writers use to fill dead air space, but I saw one that seem halfway feasible and interesting. The proposal is for the Bengals trading (I'm guessing a 2026 draft pick, perhaps a 5th round?) for Zion Johnson, as the Chargers aren't likely to exercise the 5th year option on him. His 2024 PFF is 65.9 and was charged with only one penalty this season. His numbers seem pretty even for run blocking and pass protection.

Perhaps a change of scenery could be a spark for him to find a home and show why he was a 1st round pick coming out of Boston College?

Edit: I just checked and it would only cost $2.7M for the Bengals to have him for this year. If he settles in, they could negotiate a longer deal.

He is a LG so far. Numbers pretty comparable to Patrick's last year, though with more upside. 

I still like a (healthy) Hernandez more, but he is a RG. Johnson + Hernandez with Patrick in reserve would, at worst, allow ilus to cut Volson loose to partially offset their salaries. If Johnson plays well, and gets expensive, we could let him walk a net a comp pick. 

Not a horrible idea at all. If LAC is willing.

Can you negotiate a longer term deal with a first round pick that doesn’t include picking up the 5th year option?

Yes, once the team that drafted him declines, I think that it's simply a 4 year contract like any other rookie deal.

I was looking at FA's available on Spotrac. They have Mike Hilton at a value of 12 million per year or 36 million for 3 years. I like him, but not at 31 and giving him his highest contract by far in his career. Scherff is listed at almost 7 million. Risner a lot less at 3.4 and Hernandez at 4.3.

None of these guards available would break the bank. I know Hernandez is injured, but why no contract offers from any teams for Scherff or Risner?

Love Mike, but that is steep for his age and he has problems covering bigger Receivers. Dax is our Slot Corner now.

Anyone of those Guards and I would be happy. Scherff or Risner and we are in a lot better spot at Guard than last year especially with 
Cody Ford showing he can be a good depth piece.
