So if we would have drafted Smith in 2021, we would have a great guard, but in a contract year.
It is a shame as you said Bengals do not luck out with risky players. The old could have, would have and should have comes to mind, nut easy to find the mistakes years later. As I said, 31 other tems missed and who knows if KC beats us in 2022 AFC Championship game without Smith.

If we drafted Smith in 2021 we would have a SB.

The argument isn't long term deals with top FA's. Ok. we get it. The argument is signing players like Scherff which is what NE did all those year. Aged vets that have proven production on 1 year deals that help chase a championship while those young players at their position with potential develop.
We haven't gotten the benefit of players wanting to play for us for maybe cheaper than the going rate because of Burrow to chase championships like I had hoped, and we all thought.
Or we aren't going after these aged vets looking for a ring.... Or they don't believe the Bengals are as close as some may think.

Why do you think it's going to be better? Because of Golden?

Golden + Injuries at DT, LB and CB + Salyton + draft.
I think our 2024 draft class turns out to be very good as well. Mims, Jenkins, McKinnley, Newton and Johnson as the year progressed all showed they have talent, but need experience.

Sign Scherff and draft an OL in the 2nd for insurance this year and to take over next year like we did with Brown and Mims. I have a weird feeling Peters told the FO he can fix Volson and that's why they went cheap on the OL in FA.

This team isnt a super bowl contender.
can they make the playoffs? sure. But they arent close to 2021 or 2022. Or even 2023 if Burrow never got hurt
only time will tell Frank..if you are suggesting that this football team cant rise above the loss of a DJ or Hubbard..most team s lose the "DJs and Hibbards ..especially after a couple of championship seasons..that's life and the money in the NFL ..then we don't belong in the playoffs

Golden wil help..so will those two rookies that came on at the end of last year..so will Murphy who was playing better..but again..we can revisiit this later in the year.. the draft has not arrived and also there will be many good players on many teams cut at the tail end of training camp

Im sorta against signing all these older players even if they have recognizable names

The problem appears to be that the "heir apparent" to Hubbard, Murphy, has failed to launch. Pretty much a wasted 1st round pick thus far. I'm not as worried about the interior DL, both of the rookies showed at least a little promise after the injurious start to the season.
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

Murphy is not a bad NFL DE. The issue you and others get hung up is on draft position. If he were a 4th round pick would you be ready to cut him?
I also think Bengals have Ossai, Sample(many were high on Sample before he tore his achilles and also Johnson.
The heir apparent also may not be on the roster and be drafted on day 1 or 2 in the 2025 draft.
I think our combo's of the 4 guys I mentioned are an upgrade to Hubbard who simply was bad in 2024.

If he were a 4th round pick?? Dude, if my Aunt had testicles, she'd be my Uncle... C'mon man, the Bengals spent a 1st round pick thinking that he'd develop into something much better than he's show so far. I feel confident that they won't be picking up the 5th year option on Murphy, so he'll have to show something this season, else it could be the end of the gravy train for a guy like him.

I think most people would agree with you. You expect more production out of a 1st round draft pick than you do a 4th rounder. I would hope whoever we take with the 1st round draft pick this year would be a considerable contributer to the team this season and the seasons after.
