Pickens got 3 years, I doubt Burton gets a shot in 2026 if he doesn’t turn the corner this season.

The problem, as I read this morning, is that the Bengals are the only team in the league that do not offer rookies on a waiver full injury protection. They only guarantee against catastrophic injuries. So if that's the case, I do not blame them for waiting until they are signed.

[*]December 2005: Arrested in Covington, Kentucky, for marijuana possession, his first arrest after being drafted.
[*]January 30, 2006: Arrested in Orlando, Florida, on multiple gun charges, including concealment and aggravated assault with a firearm. He pleaded guilty and avoided jail time.
[*]April 29, 2006: Arrested in Covington, Kentucky, for providing alcohol to three underage females (ages 18, 16, and 15) at a hotel. An 18-year-old initially accused him of sexual assault, but she retracted her story and was charged with filing a false police report.
[*]June 3, 2006: Pulled over on Interstate 275 in Ohio for suspected drunk driving, with a blood-alcohol level of .092, just over Ohio’s legal limit of .08.
[*]October 6, 2006: Suspended by the NFL for two games for violating the league’s substance abuse and personal conduct policies.
[*]January 25, 2007: Pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor violation of a “keg law” (providing alcohol to minors) in Covington, Kentucky. Sentenced to 90 days in jail, with all but two days suspended.
[*]April 2007: Suspended by the NFL for the first eight games of the 2007 season for repeated violations of the personal conduct policy, with a warning that further issues could end his career.
[*]April 2008: Arrested in Cincinnati for misdemeanor assault and criminal damaging after allegedly punching an 18-year-old and breaking a car window with a beer bottle. The Bengals waived him but later re-signed him.
[*]December 16, 2009: Henry was involved in a domestic dispute with his fiancée, Loleini Tonga, in Charlotte, North Carolina. During the altercation, Henry was in the bed of a pickup truck driven by Tonga. As she drove away, he either fell or jumped from the vehicle, suffering severe head injuries. He was found on the road and pronounced dead the next day, December 17, 2009, at age 26. The incident was investigated by police, but Tonga was not charged, as it was deemed an accident. No alcohol or drugs were reported as factors in the incident.

Dang. You are 100% right, I had basically forgotten about all lot of that stuff. Either way though, it is a cautionary tale. And Burton does have at least one accusation of assault a year into his NFL career, even though no charges were filed.

The rooks that are 'sitting out' until fully signed are doing the right thing.

The Bengals on the other hand need to join the the other 31 teams to have full injury protections. Why they haven't, who knows why with this club.
