He takes a pay cut after we did not sign anyone to compete with him in free agency nor did we draft anyone to compete with him in the draft.
So we go to him and ask him to take a pay cut of just 1.6 million dollars (which is, generally speaking, inconsequential from a cap perspective), and if he doesn't....what? We start Daijahn Anthony? Or sign Justin Simmons/Julian Blackmon?
Why not sign some depth regardless?
This is exactly how I feel about the guard position. What is the downside to signing a veteran to create an actual competition? Make a few players that were on the worst defense we've had in a long time, or the worst guard pair we've had in a long time, truly compete to win the starting job.
So many "starter by default" players on this roster to feel comfortable going into the 2025 season.
And what can you do with 1.6M dollars in the NFL? Stone mentioned he hoped it would go to Trey but...really? 1.6M isn't going to make a difference to Trey.
If we were 1.6M off from re-signing Trey and we haven't yet, I'd be so unbelievably pissed with this FO. Disenfranchising your best defender for what amounts to pocket change in the NFL...
The Bengals just operate on a fundamentally different level than every other franchise. We currently have nearly 27M dollars in cap space.
What are we going to spend that money on?
Are we just going to roll 20 million dollars over to 2026 in a season where we should be competing to win a Super Bowl?
It's just negligent behavior.
Overall I guess I cannot argue CrazyJDawg. All I know is every little bit helps, with the restructures and possible cuts of Stone, Moss, Pratt,
Volson that is more than 1.6 mil and Trey is only expected to make 16 mil this year and as you say we have the cap space on top of it to
extend him. I will call it negligent if a Trey deal does not get done before the season, just like I did last year with Ja'Marr.
They finally got the Ja'Marr done and had to pay dearly, hopefully they learned from it. Trey's pass rush has not fell off one bit.

You said they were cheap, then you say they spent on Tee and Chase. Guess what Sherlock, they could have passed on one or both. Signing them makes you look like you are a sandwich short of a picnic. Try another narrative or prove your own BS.
Now we result to insults? Yikes.
When it comes to contract structures, signings, etc. They are cheap. They just are. They fight for every nickle and dime they can get. It's why it took three years to sign Higgins and two years to sign Chase. It's why their first round draft pick is the only first round pick that is currently unsigned.
There is story after story about the Bengals low balling players when negotiating contracts, them cheaping out on locker room amentities, etc.
I don't make this stuff up. It's based in reality.
Yes, they are spending some money on players that they had no choice but to re-sign. Good for them. That doesn't mean they are not cheap.
My grandma is one of the cheapest ladies I know but she loves Raos pasta sauce. This is a lady that will dilute laundry detergent to get more value out of it. Raos comes at a premium and is significantly more than other pasta sauces. She doesn't mind splurging on it because she likes it that much. Doesn't mean she isn't cheap.

The majority of the 2025 first round draft picks have not signed yet according to the NFL.com tracker.

My guess is they're concerned with Trey's age and his production falling off. They probably have a number they'd go to, but it isn't highest paid rusher number.

Sorry. I was talking to a friend and he made that claim. I should have looked at it before I posted. I stand corrected.
