Trey Hendrickson Update
(Yesterday, 02:55 PM)Essex Johnson Wrote: well he is under contract and bengals expect him to honor contract, in someways it is out of their control how any player is going to perform but sure  could impact this year, we won;t know that till after the season but with the signings of Burrow, Chase and Higgins if we have to move on from Tre  are window of success is still in good shape and lets see what benefits we could gain from either trading him or using those $$ for other signings etc.

Yes, I realize he agreed to a contract, but he's been in the top sack leaders in the NFL for 3 yrs, so he deserves a productivity bonus at the very least.  Cutting Pratt and reducing Volson's money should allow us plenty of room to get this done.  We have almost $32-M in cap space.  Katie Blackburn offered him $28-M, that's a $10M raise on an extension, but he wants a multi-year guarantee.  He's 31, so Father Time is catching up with him in NFL years, so I guess this is the impasse.

Offer him a guaranteed 28M for 2 years, with a likely-to-be-earned bonus of $5M to be in the top NFL sack leaders with a minimum of 14-sacks. We can afford the cap hit, but if he doesn't produce, then the $5M bonus gets rolled into next year's cap space.  That still leaves us with $17M in cap space and gives him an incentive to produce at a higher level.

We need him on defense, or else we're going to have to score 45 points a game to win on a last-second second FG.  Would Jerry Jones be playing this game with the NFL sack leader?   Maybe I'm missing something, but I know what I'm paying for season tickets, and they're some of the most expensive in the league.  Get him happy and let's get back to the Super Bowl!!

28 million is a 12 million dollar raise as his guaranteed base is 15.6 million. He was already paid the rest of the cap hit in 2022 signing bonus.

I am not saying he is not worth it, but the question becomes ho much in 2025 to get him to sign an extension for 2026 and possibly 2027.

But he can't hit the open market, big difference. He's under contract. Either a team gives us a 1st or he can sit out the season or retire. Carson Palmer had a reason for being disgruntled (he wanted to win) & his demand for a trade helped the team in the long run. It's all about the money to Trey & if they don't get anything in return for him it does'nt help the team.

Is having him sit out for the season  out of spite the best thing for the team?

Or would it be better to sign him to a market value deal and have him play the season?

Personally, I would pick option 2!

I keep reading Trey was cheated by the Bengals when he signed an extension after the 2022 season. Let's review the facts.

https://www.nfl.com/players/trey-hendrickson/stats/career
Sacks
2022 Cincinnati Bengals 15 29 19 10 8 0 3
2021 Cincinnati Bengals 16 34 21 13 14 0 0
2020 New Orleans Saints 15 25 22 3 13.5 0 1
2019 New Orleans Saints 13 19 11 8 4.5 0 0
2018 New Orleans Saints 5 6 5 1 0 0 0
2017 New Orleans Saints 12 13 7 6 2 0 2
42 total 6 sacks in 6 NFL seasons and in 2022 had only 8 sacks and missed 2 games, He had never played a full season, missed total 25 games in those 6 seasons.

Bengals extended him anyway and made him at the time the 4th highest paid DE in the NFL in AVG per year at 21 million per year. Trey is a true DE, other like Watt are considered outside LB's.

So looking at Trey's production, was he treated unfairly by the FO when they did not have to, but did offer him an extension? He has injury history and did not have a great 2022 season, yet Bengals extended him ayway in good faith in my opinion.

2024 30 $14,800,000 $5,166,666 - $200,000 $20,166,666 7.90% $7,833,334

They should've had the foresight to see this impasse and trade the guy.

That this has dragged so long is ***** malpractice.

Disagree. The FO made the right call not to trade him. We'd never get a player that good back, and there were not comparable FA DEs we could sign with the $$.

They have cost themselves $$, and the lost opportunity to spend that money elsewhere to strengthen the squad, by being cheap with the first offer and stubborn. Typical Bungles.

But I'm confident a,deal gets done before camp ir early on in camp. If it drags beyond that, then I will get pissed/worried.

It would appear that the majority of NFL teams did not feel that trey was worth the asking price..and frankly aside from 5-6 games when he accumulates all his sacks..he dissapears..

Hendrickson is not going to make or break the defense..it is obvious ..the bengals ..along with the majority of other teams do not feel hendrickson is worth the value that he and his agents are demanding...and I agree
