Whose side on you on? Trey, the Bengals or none?

I think Trey made a massive mistake signing that extension in 2023 and I can't believe he has not fired his agent yet. He apparently needed more money in that moment and, having outperformed the contract he signed in 2021, wanted some up front money in that off season.

So he sold another year of his career for instant financial relief rather than waiting until his contract expired (which would have been this off season) to cash in on his success.

Essentially, he bet against himself. He could have been getting 30M AAV offers right now, but instead he is stuck with just 16M this year. It is his fault he isn't a free agent right now.

HOWEVER,

The Bengals know he deserves more than 16M...He is one of the 3 best pass rushers in the NFL. The thought of him playing on that contract should feel wrong to them.

They have already reportedly offered him 28M AAV. If they are willing to give him 28M, why not 30M? or 32M? What's the difference? You can spread that money out in a way that it will have no impact on anything. Especially since the Bengals routinely roll 10M over each year. Who cares if they only roll over 6M for 2 or 3 years?

The negative press and reputation across the league is not worth a few million dollars, in my opinion.

The truth of the matter is Trey is under contract this season, and then he will be franchise tagged, and then he may even be franchise tagged again. So he may just need to accept what they're offering him.

With the amount of control the Bengals have, there's a decent change he's going to be stuck with the Bengals until he retires, so take the money on the table. He cannot waste a year of his career when he's already in his 30s. This is where you get your "my family will never have to work a day in their lives" money (even though he probably already has that money).

Otherwise, the Bengals FO will just force him into retirement.

To put it simply, they are both to blame for this mess. Trey bet against himself and signed a very bad deal, and the Bengals are exploiting that.

I'd say if everyone on the roster performs well enough to deserve the kind of raise he wants, then it's a good problem to have.  We all know that that scenario will never occur.  So no, every player will not want a raise if you give one to Trey.  The team takes when players underperform.

You have to have your head buried pretty deep in the sand to suggest that what a top 5 player on the roster and elite player in the league does will impact "every player".

In case you haven't been watching, almost every high end player in the league wants a raise when he outperforms his deal.  Most teams deal with this at some point.  It just happens to be our turn now.

Trey is not a top 5 DE by any outlets rankings. He's usually 8th or 9th.

Bengals Board fans.... "Trey is over 30 and is not going to get a 1st round trade or a long expensive contract from anyone."

Also Bengals Board fans.... "The Bengals should pay him whatever he asks for to keep him."

Its hard to even be fair about it not knowing what is or is not going on behind the scenes with the two parties..

All I know is the Bengals have spent alot of money on Tee and Chase, let's not have the damn defense blow another year over lack of negotiations. The front office definitely needs to step it up this is their season! Dont fumble and get these deals done or move on an alternative to put this team in a position to win a SB.

I said on the roster.  Name one player on the defense better than him.  Name 5 on the roster.  Go ahead.

Which player on this team is going to be the next to pull a Hendrickson?

Either way, if you think he's even top 10, this is a defense that can ill afford losing a player of that caliber.  It's pure cope when certain fans suggest that "ooh, he's not that good anyway."  That's clownery in it's purest form.

Brown family fans: "I'd rather see one of the worst defenses in the league lose it's best player than the family lose in a contract dispute".

Everyone has different priorities.  You want Katie and Mikey to hold the Lombardi of contract negotiations.  Others like myself would like to see the team on the field win football games.

Is there like a Sunday Ticket for negotiations?  Is it expensive?

Im in the do nothing camp.

I want what’s best for the team, and paying an aging DE big money likely would not be a savvy move.

The bengals inked him to a great contract and he’s been the face of the defense since 2021.

But all good things must come to an end.

I think you pretty much nailed it CrazyJDawg. Both are to blame and mostly Trey's agent. He should of fired the agent a while back.

Sure hope Trey gets smart and fires his agent hires another one and gets a decent contract fair to him. No one wants to see the Bengals FO
force him into retirement, not even the FO.
