I think Trey made a massive mistake signing that extension in 2023 and I can't believe he has not fired his agent yet. He apparently needed more money in that moment and, having outperformed the contract he signed in 2021, wanted some up front money in that off season.
So he sold another year of his career for instant financial relief rather than waiting until his contract expired (which would have been this off season) to cash in on his success.
Essentially, he bet against himself. He could have been getting 30M AAV offers right now, but instead he is stuck with just 16M this year. It is his fault he isn't a free agent right now.
HOWEVER,
The Bengals know he deserves more than 16M...He is one of the 3 best pass rushers in the NFL. The thought of him playing on that contract should feel wrong to them.
They have already reportedly offered him 28M AAV. If they are willing to give him 28M, why not 30M? or 32M? What's the difference? You can spread that money out in a way that it will have no impact on anything. Especially since the Bengals routinely roll 10M over each year. Who cares if they only roll over 6M for 2 or 3 years?
The negative press and reputation across the league is not worth a few million dollars, in my opinion.
The truth of the matter is Trey is under contract this season, and then he will be franchise tagged, and then he may even be franchise tagged again. So he may just need to accept what they're offering him.
With the amount of control the Bengals have, there's a decent change he's going to be stuck with the Bengals until he retires, so take the money on the table. He cannot waste a year of his career when he's already in his 30s. This is where you get your "my family will never have to work a day in their lives" money (even though he probably already has that money).
Otherwise, the Bengals FO will just force him into retirement.
To put it simply, they are both to blame for this mess. Trey bet against himself and signed a very bad deal, and the Bengals are exploiting that.
