It's a stand up 5 tech right? LE/RE would be 5 tech and 4 tech. ROLB/LOLB would be 6, 7 , and 9 tech.

That's kinda where i'm confused about what terminology they use for what. Trey lines up almost 50/50 between REO and ROLB. By pure positional alignment you are correct. OLB would have to be 7/9 but i've seen 6/7 (with Trey) with either hand down or stand up...so i'd say to be correct, as you said, REO LEO would be 6/7 (hand up or down?) and ROLB and LOLB would be 7/9 standing up.

I don't study this nearly enough so i should probably just wait for people that know more to chime in.  Big Grin

EDIT: 5/6   7/9

Cool, still I see Shemar was lined up all over the place. Those stats don't really show exactly what Gap he is lined up over.

I'm a dumbass its probably.

RE/LE - 5 Tech (Outside shoulder of OT) and 4 Tech (directly over OT)
REO/LEO - Hand Down 6 Tech (Inside shoulder of TE), 7 Tech (directly over TE), 9 Tech (Outside shoulder of TE)
ROLB/LOLB - Stand up 6, 7, 9 Tech with some "5" Tech (space because of TE alignment)

So that's where my confusion sets in. Even numbers line up directly over so i'd expect 6 to be directly over the TE (0 over C, 2 over G, 4 over T). Odd numbers shade outside, interior even numbers shading inside (2i G, 4i T). Where it gets a little funky is the TE. The numbers aren't linear out there. From my understanding, 6 head up on the TE but then 7 is shading inside the TE and 9 is shading outside the TE...(two odd numbers)

I wonder how much freedom Trey has to decide hand down or stand up because like i said, i've seen him do it multiple ways.

I agree w/4, 5 being LE/RE.
With what i said above about the TE, i wonder if 6/7 is LEO/REO w/ some 5 depending on spacing (as you said above about OLB), with hand down.
Which would leave 6/7/9 standing up as LOLB/ROLB.

I just wonder if the presence or not of a TE has anything to do with determining it?

Well...based on what we're talking about on alignment, it looks like he plays closer to the tackle almost 2x as much as further away. So i would think, if he's in for Trey, he should get more opportunities to use his athleticism to get around the T. He's gotta work on those hands though and not allowing the T to clamp him down. Something Trey excells at. Shemar can't just rely on his brute strenght to get him to the QB if he's out wider.

You can still have your hand down in a 9 tech. Jim Schwartz does it quite a bit. It gets really fun when you going goalline and short yardage where you throw the 8 tech over the wing outside the 9t.

Thanks Synric. I didn't know all that.

Figured they had different techs and terms for gaps but that actually helps bring it all together for this dumbass. Smirk

Completely agree with all of that Rfaulk. Shemar has got to work on his hands as you say, no one does it better than Trey.

He came in with a good attitude and approach. Sounds like he moved on from the contract situation.

Good to see he hadn’t lost his enthusiasm.

My apologies in advance if this topic has ended, or I stating the obvious. But following is the basic Bryant/Phillips numbering system.

There are specific differences between 3-4 and 4-3 responsibility (run defense in 2 point stance/rush in three point), where the DE lines up relative to the outside foot of the offensive "end", how does the DE line up (perpendicular to or in an angle to the line), etc.

As an off topic, the weakness in the wide alignment in traditional 4-3 is defending the run and exposing the C-Gap - unless the DT is in 3 tech or a LB is protecting it..

Depends on spacing too. A 43 DE can play anywhere from 5t all they way out to 9t. (Besides heads up on the TE 6t or 7t depending on who taught you the system)

Wait I thought a 4 tech was DT or is that just a 4I?

That's the crazy/interesting/fun thing about schemes and 'games' and strategy. It's like playdoh. You can shape and mold it so many ways and it can keep you busy for hours going over all the things you can do with just 22 guys on a field. Big Grin

I agree.

The beauty of Football to me is when the Xs and Os match up perfectly. Right defense called/adjusted against the offensive play, after all the eye candy motions.

That is when you see if your talent can beat their talent. And this is when you see the weak links and stars separate themselves from the rest.
