AJ McCarron is a future star
I for one hope McCarron has a superstar pre season. Not because I feel he should be starting but it shows me that the backup WRs, TEs, and RBs are tearing it up. Who Dey!

But there's more here, and I think it was the "arrogant" label he got after some of the interviews.  I really think that is why he fell.  But one man's arrogance is another man's confidence.  It didn't bother the Bengals and I think they possibly got a gem here.  I'm a Dalton supporter, but if McCarron turns out to be the better QB, he'll probably be starting next year.

Tom Brady is as arrogant as anyone on this planet.
He was always arrogant, in college he did not get the results. As a pro, he did. That arrogance (confidence in his ability) helped him get better and persevere.

BB is as well.

Ben R.

The arrogant leaders are everywhere. I could care less if a guy is arrogant as long as he can back it up with results. I hope AJ backs it up and I think he started by working his tail off in the offseason with House versus taking 5 or 6 months off.

2024 may go on record as one of most underperforming teams in Bengal history. Bengal's FO has major work to do on defensive side of the ball. I say tag and trade Tee Higgins in 2025 to start with the rebuild.

3. With his Bum shoulder it's really hard to figure out his rankings due to the not so great Combine.

Teams love confident QBs.  That would not make him drop in the draft.

Injured players get drafted high all the time.  In fact we just took one in the first round this year.  The Combine is not that big of a deal when evaluating players.  The only ones that it effects are the ones who are the very worst or the very best.

It's almost like you Bengals fans have Stockholm Syndrome or something when it comes to Dalton.

You will circle the wagons to defend him and put blame on AJ Green, Marvin Lewis, the defense, anyone BUT Dalton for his repeated failures.

Something positive comes along about AJ McCarron, and Bengals fans everywhere (not just specifically here) bash him, downplay it, and dismiss it. "Oh he hasn't thrown a preseason pass yet." Well neither have Mariota or Winston, and their respective fanbases are excited about it, they want to hear good news on those guys, the positive news feeds their hopes for the upcoming season.

Among Bengal fans, the positive news on McCarron is viewed as an assault on Dalton, and everyone attempts to downplay it to the point where some of you guys become negative when you hear positive news about your own player!

I've been lurking and reading this thread, and doing lots of research on AJ McCarron over the past few months. Yes there have been more successful 1st round QBs than 7th round QBs, and that can be said for any other position on the football field. But guys like Jeff Garcia and Tony Romo weren't even drafted, Tom Brady sat around forever, and sometimes the NFL scouts are restricted by what they see at the time, not what the potential is.

McCarron had a bum shoulder which affected his throwing strength. It's fixed.

McCarron had a set of bad interviews because he viewed himself as the best QB in that class. That remains to be seen.

McCarron worked with Tom House to improve his throwing strength, to become more efficient at QB, and he put in the work. NFL scouts interviewing him probably viewed that behavior as an impossibility from the guy who thought he was the best QB in the world, they probably thought he would just coast (ala Manziel) and expect his natural talent to be better than anyone else's. But Tom Brady thought that, other great QBs have thought that, and it has fueled them to become great. They put in the work to become great and maximize that talent.

You guys have a QB here who is doing all the right things, saying all the right things, approaching it the right way, and has something already that Andy Dalton will never have - the desire to be great, the will to win, and a refusal to accept losing. That's between the ears, it can't be taught, and even if he ends up being a great backup for a few years, can't you guys be happy with that?

Other people see so much more potential in him than a backup QB, and that's fine. I'm one of them.

But to dismiss McCarron and rally around Dalton isn't much different than the Patriot fans who thought Bledsoe was the answer and Brady should have been benched the second Drew came back from his injury. How'd that turn out for them? And do you guys realize the similarity between Bledsoe's style of play at QB and Dalton's? The appreciation of regular season stat accumulation while pretending those playoff failures are someone else's fault?

You guys will grow to love McCarron, whether you want to or not. He'll find his way onto the football field and he won't be removed from it until he decides to retire. He has that fire and that drive. He has that experience in big situations, that ability to excel in them rather than lay an egg. Andy Dalton has a career 1:6 TD:INT ratio in playoff games. Russell Wilson? 12:6. Roethlisberger? 21:19. Aaron Rodgers? 23:7. Matt Ryan? 9:7.

You don't get a chance to improve on your playoff stats when you lay an egg in every playoff game.

Remind me again why you guys defend Dalton so much and dismiss McCarron so easily?

He's the one guy on this entire team that could take you from perennial playoff 1 and done to SB contenders.

Drew Bledsoe career playoff TD:INT? 6:12. Tom Brady? 53:26.

You'll learn to love him.

Mccarron to TE Murphy, not sure whose covering him. Touch pass caught in the endzone and it looks sweet.

Got it from this guy's blog it has lots of images and videos from day 1 to savor over.

Ehem. Actually the video I posted is from day 1 of camp. The Int you are referring to just happened today surely several post after this one. I would say he's not the only QB to throw Int's and errant passes in camp but I don't want to point those out because this is the time to learn from mistakes and come together as a team.

I hope he is successful in the NFL. I am neutral on AJ as I haven't seen him play yet. It will all work out like it is supposed to, I guess. :snark:

I'm really looking forward to the preseason games this year because of McCarron.  I want him to show enough that if he's called upon that we can lean on him as a capable backup.  If he's more than that, that's even better as we'll have the luxury of two starting caliber QBs.  It's hard enough in the NFL to have one.
To each his own... unless you belong to a political party...

Typical Bama fan. Can't read what people are actually saying in this thread.

Bengal fan. "I am not rooting against McCarron.  In fact, I'd like to see him do well because it would help our team.  But, I'd just like to see him do something against NFL competition before anointing him as a great NFL starting QB"

Bama fan.  "Why do you hate McCarron so much for no reason.  Why are you defending Dalton?  How can you be so blind?  You must be suffering from some sort of mental illness.  Where are my sheets?!?!?"

Let me go back through the first couple pages of this thread and help you remember what was said -

Quote:Get back with us after .... you know ... he throws a pass.

Quote:I don't hate him. I don't think he's a very good QB.

And I'm certainly not going to dub him before has thrown even a pre-season NFL pass.

Quote:It's just rare to find a guy who had the talents around him that a guy like McCarron had at Alabama and see that translate to NFL success.

Quote:I can really only speak for myself, but the only reason I bag on McCarron is to annoy the drooling masses that constantly call for him to start after Dalton makes his first mistake of the season. That shit gets tired - especially when we ain't even seen the dude throw a pass against a second or third string NFL defense.

Now what we know is that you've admitted you are a Tennessee fan, and you disliked McCarron, and you pulled the "but nobody's being negative about McCarron!" gag earlier in this thread.

Here's you-

Quote:I am a Vol fan. I hated McCarron in college, but even I am hoping he becomes a good NFL QB.

Yet you seem beholden to the kidnapper of your franchise, Andy Dalton.  You continue to downplay McCarron's positive news and pretend you're keeping things in perspective, when
really you're still grinding that axe from college.  Let go.  Sit back and enjoy it.  Let the positive McCarron news wash over you like a tattoo artist linking your arm tattoos together across your chest.

Nobody is "anointing him a great starting NFL QB" right now, I think some people have commented on his potential but we all recognize that it takes experience to improve and it will take experience for him to reach his ceiling.  Again, you called out people for making a strawman earlier on this thread, and look at what you're doing.  Who has said "AJ McCarron is a great starting NFL QB - right now?"

I'm not a Bama fan.  Not everyone who think AJ McCarron will end up being a star in the NFL is wearing Bama or SEC glasses.  Just like not every 5th rounder is destined to ride the bench and hold a clipboard.

Annnddd then it's stuff like this that makes the homer side look ridiculous.

Where has ANYBODY said to cut Dalton? I don't even think CornerBlitz or Utts have said to cut the guy. You say "many of you", yet there are a total of 0 people on here that think it would be a smart idea to cut Andy Dalton.

There are/were plenty people calling for McCarran to start over Dalton before even seeing him in action. Then again these are the same folks calling for us to trade for Johnny Football last season. But still. McCarron has his strong following, and many want to see him get his shot to start.
