If your finances are to the point of starvation or internet then you don't need internet. Because if your that poor you can't afford a computer.

I have received at least 4 computers being passed down from my family. Actually, that is how I found out one of my brothers was gay. I don't wanna say what I saw on his computer, lol. ThumbsUp

You can get a computer, easy. Computers are a great tool to find jobs, sell things, work, etc. Don't you want poor people to have resources at their disposal? Sure, some will take advantage, but screw them. Don't hurt or look down upon those who are trying to get out of their situation.

Poor kids don't need the internet.

They need to learn how to fish and mow grass.

That is a copout.  The people that work for a living should not be forced to pay for the "poor" to be sustained at the same level as those who pull their own weight.

If they can't afford 8 dollars a month then no they don't need the Internet.

They could easily make the 8 dollars by ether fishing or cutting grass.

I know the conservative logic very well, and it seems to me that they look down upon poor people. Even the poor ones. The one good quality though, is conservatives want to motivate poor people into helping themselves. I get it. I am not saying that it is intentional, but the way conservatives talk about poor people is very assumptious (I might have made that word up, lol!) and condescending. Every poor person on welfare, it's their fault? Everyone with a food stamp card and an iPhone should not be getting food stamps. My wife has to have an iPhone for her job. Lots of people have parents that pay for their phones if they are poor. Not every poor person with a computer or phone has had to pay for it. Shit, I have a brand new 52inch flat screen tv. It was given to me from my brother. Now, we are not poor (not rich by any means or even comfortable), and I can afford one. But that is not my point. I guess poor people should just have bread and water and live in a tent until they can get out of the poorhouse. :snark:

How was that a copout? I have no problem paying taxes and for programs to help people out. A lot of times, it saves families and helps them get back on their feet. Now, having said that, I do think their should be welfare reform, and something needs to be done with the people who abuse it and are lazy.

Do you get that a computer and internet is a useful tool to find a job? If one is poor, they might not have a car. Sure, they can take a bus or hitch rides. Rolleyes

I save tons of money shopping online too. More a year than I pay for the internet.

I know you made that bread and water comment as a joke. But there is something to that ..... You have to be without to drive you to want more. Making someone's life comfortable is not helping them climb up. You need to make people uncomfortable to get them moving. I think there is a comfort level to the beneft culture. Even the min wage people in Seattle want less hours to keep their comfort level.

Then the 8 dollars a month investment will he worth it. And a way to prioritize it on their budgeting.

I get that. And don't totally disagree with that line of thinking. Sometimes, I just think you guys are being extreme about it. I have been poor before. I made it my "job" to get out of the rut. I've never drawn unemployment, never been on food stamps, etc. But I did have a computer and internet and it helped me get a great job when I didn't have a car. It has helped me in so many ways. It happens to other people. People have to have resources. And just because it makes it easier, doesn't mean it won't be put to good use. Like I said, I would love to weed out the freeloaders. I agree with y'all on that. Everyone's situation is different.

Put it this way, I wonder how many people had a great job working for say, a huge phone company, only years later to lose their job because of the lack of people getting phones. I mean, just 20 years ago, we all thought that phone companies would always be huge!

A lot of people on welfare and food stamps are veterans. I mean A LOT. One thing we can agree on, is the Repubs and the Dems need to do more for those that served for our country. I actually have a great story about some conservative beeeyotch getting onto a young girl with a baby using food stamps.......man.......that conservative witch left the grocery in a hurry. Left her $400 worth of food in her cart. Tongue   I will tell the story when I have time. ThumbsUp

Not a bad point, yo. I still think there is more to it, like I have been saying today. ThumbsUp

If someone just lost their good job, and needs the resources, it should be available for them. I am not saying someone should get free internet for life, lol.

Everyone has been on hard times. I had to use the library computer/internet for almost a month once. I was job hunting after I lost almost everything. So I know what it's like to struggle.

I also know that if your down for more than a year your doing something wrong. And no amount of benefit checks will help.

Don't they have computers with internet access at the public libraries?

Yes. But it has already been established that not every one is capable of making it to a library. Not everyone has easy access to one. What about the guy who lost his job by no fault of his, lives by himself 20 minutes away in the boonies? Do you think he should not have access to the internet to help him find a job? Maybe he should just walk. Tongue

How's he going to get to work if he can't get to the library?

Find something closer? Find a ride? Sure, he can find a ride to the library, but I know I spent hours upon hours on the internet to find the good job I have now. I'm sorry, but I think it is a wonderful tool to help better yourself. Oh, and porn of course. The more and easier access people have to find jobs, the better their chances are. I don't see how that is not logical. ThumbsUp
