We are shutting down everything to spread it out.  We don't want a sudden spike in cases that overtaxes the hospitals that are already short of tests, respirators and protective gear.

Panic is bad.  Respect for it is good.

And yes, hoarding TP is stupid.

It’s still the flu. Not all strains are covered in your annual flu shot. Getting the flu sucks.....for everyone. No one wants the flu. If your 90 years old, getting Influena A pry isn’t in your best interest. Why don’t we shut the country down every fly season?

Actually, it's not the flu. It is not an influenza strain. COVID-19 (for COronaVIrus Disease 2019) is a coronavirus disease that cropped up in 2019. Coronaviruses are a specific class of viruses. From the NIH:

Quote:Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses, like the common cold, in people. However, three times in the 21st century coronavirus outbreaks have emerged from animal reservoirs to cause severe disease and global transmission concerns.

There are hundreds of coronaviruses, most of which circulate among animals including pigs, camels, bats and cats. Sometimes those viruses jump to humans—called a spillover event—and can cause disease. Seven coronaviruses are known to cause human disease, four of which are mild: viruses 229E, OC43, NL63 and HKU1. Three of the coronaviruses can have more serious outcomes in people, and those diseases are SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) which emerged in late 2002 and disappeared by 2004; MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome), which emerged in 2012 and remains in circulation in camels; and COVID-19, which emerged in December 2019 from China and a global effort is under way to contain its spread. COVID-19 is caused by the coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2.

https://www.niaid.nih.gov/diseases-conditions/coronaviruses

So the closest diseases to this are MERS and SARS, not any sort of flu.

Trump is taking the fight to those foreigners and illegal immigrants who would leech off our healthcare system in a time of crisis--stealing healthcare from honest patriots.

Can we assume that Pence would have this priority?

It’s the FLU! No one wants to get the flu, whether is influenza A-B-or C. It’s deadly to old folks and immuno-compromised people. This is nothing new. The flu is deadly. Why are we freaking out this much? Shutting down EVERYTHING.....it’s not going to stop someone from going to get the flu. It’s just going to prolong this. Businesses are going to go out of business because of this fear. Flu season comes every year. People die from the flu every year. A, B or now we have C. I don’t get this fear. The fear itself is worse than the actual flu. Sorry for my ramblings but people need to start hearing some common sense in this effed up times. And QUIT buying toilet paper for an upper respiratory virus.

It’s not the flu. Although it can cause flu like symptoms and the same complications of the flu. So I understand why you recognize they are similar. But, there are important differences.

It is a new strain of coronavirus that apparently mutated in bats and spread to humans.

No human has immunity to this virus and there isn’t a vaccine. Care for viral infections is supportive. There isn’t a medication you can be prescribed to make it go away or “cure” it. Once you’re infected you’re own immune system must combat it.

With a new virus like this we don’t know how bad it could be and we are currently still learning. It could be like the seasonal flu. It could be like the Spanish flu of 1812. Or it could be World War Z. We don’t know at the beginning of any novel virus.

Social distancing is proven to slow the spread of infection which is important at the beginning with a novel virus. If we don’t do it early the infection could become so prevalent it won’t make a difference later. The only question really is when to implement it. After 100 deaths? After 1000 deaths? After 10,000? So it’s better to err on the side of caution.

Iraq and Afghanistan have cost trillions and we got a tax cut for the wealthy and corporations. I think we’ll just add it to our bar tab.

To the bolded. Excellent points there, especially the emphasis on our OWN immune system as the first line of defense at present.

We're not used to hearing "The doctors don't have a pill for it yet"--but there it is.

And we need to be cautious in assuming it is "like the flu" or a cold, when no one has immunity yet.

My hope is that three months from now Fox is pivoting again, stressing this was just a panic, another Dem hoax to get rid of Trump.
THEN I'll know the Coronavirus was just like the flu or a cold.

That story isn’t typical, but it is a cautionary tale not to think Covid-19 is the flu.

Yeah according to the COVID-19 tracker provided by Johns Hopkins University:

Italy has surpassed China in deaths.

RE: Coronavirus - oncemoreuntothejimbreech - 03-20-2020

New York’s positive cases increased from 700 to over 8,000 from Sunday through today mostly due to increased testing. That gives us an idea how prevalent it is.
