Had a very good friend who found God (right after his divorce) and we would argue these things all the time.  He said there was no way at all I could understand the "true" meaning of scripture more than him because he STUDIED it!  He had a teacher and went to class and he learned what it REALLY means.

And I ended every discussion the same way:  The only way we'll know who is right it when we die.
