I'm not much of a Catholic anymore if at all, but if you read why homosexuality is a sin, you will better understand that they didn't just say, "Gay people are gross. Let's make that a sin." It's the same reason birth control and pre-marital sex are sins.
Oh the church hated ANYTHING that didn't lead to their being more Catholics born!
