I don't start many threads, but thought one might be useful to track all weekly playoff implications.
I will update weekly.
AFC North Division W L Division Conference Games Back Games Left To Play
1. Cincinnati 8 0 3-0 7-0 X 8
2. Pittsburgh 5 4 0-2 2-4 3.5 7
3. Baltimore 2 6 1-2 2-4 6 8
4. Cleveland 2 7 1-1 2-5 6.5 7
AFC Contenders
1. New England 8 0 3-0 6-0
2. Cincinnati 8 0 3-0 7-0
3. Denver 7 1 2-0 4-1
4. Indianapolis 4 5 3-0 4-3
5. Buffalo 5 4 3-1 5-3
6. N.Y. Jets 5 4 1-2 4-3
7. Pittsburgh 5 4 0-2 2-4
8. Oakland 4 4 1-1 4-3
See Post #59 on page #3 for Official tie breaker rules
Week 10 Playoff Implications:
1. Cincinnati v. Houston
Crucial Prime Time Home Game to stay undefeated (Setting new Bengals win streak record to 9 games). Other important reasons to win this game: It's a Conference game and a common opponent with New England we are competing for #1 Conference Seed (1st Round Bye and Home Field). Cincinnati and New England both play: Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Houston, & Denver. Who-Dey!
2. Cleveland v. Pittsburgh
Since both teams are division opponents, it doesn't matter which one wins affecting strength of schedule. If Cleveland loses they would be 2-8 w/ just 6 games to play. If Cincinnati wins also, that would make them 7.5 games back w/ 6 games to play - mathematically eliminating them from being able to catch the Bengals for AFC North.
The best scenario for Cincinnati is Pittsburgh losing - falling to 5-5; and 0-3 in the division. Since Cincy already won one game against Pitt, a tie would go to division record. And Cincinnati is 3-0 in division now making just one victory in the division away from clinching that tie breaker from Pittsburgh. But more devastating, w/ a Bengals win, Pittsburgh would be 4.5 games back of Cincinnati w/ just 6 to play. In addition, NE played Pitt, but won't play CLE (SOS). Go Cleveland!
3. Jacksonville v. Baltimore
A Ravens loss would make them 2-7. Combined w/ a Cinncinati win they would be 7 games behind Cincinnati w/ 7 to play. Cincinnati already beat them once so the tie breaker would be division record in which they are already 2-4. That means a Ravens loss on Sunday would mathematically eliminate them from catching Cincinnati for AFC North Division.
Oddly, Bengals would rather Baltimore win this game. It's most unlikely Ravens win the rest of their games and Bengals lose the rest of their games, so a Ravens win means more to Cincinnati boosting their strength of schedule - a tie breaker w/ New England. Also, NE plays Jacksonville and a Jaguars loss would weaken NE SOS. Go Ravens!
4. New England v. NY Giants
A Patriots loss could put them one game behind Cincinnati for the top seed in the AFC. Giants could do it. Go Giants!
5. Chiefs v. Broncos
Both teams are regular season opponents of Cincinnati, so it doesn't matter which team loses from a SOS argument. However, w/ Denver at 7-1, a Broncos loss could give Bengals a 2 game cushion over them for the #2 Seed in the AFC. That would mean Denver could beat us and we'd still have a 1 game lead for that #2 Seed. Go Chiefs!
6. Other SOS (Strength of Schedule) Tie Breaker Implications:
Miami v. Philly - Go Eagles (NE plays both - but plays Miami 2x).
Chicago v. St.L - CIN plays Rams, so Go Rams!
Dallas v Tampa Bay - NE plays Cowboys, so Go Bucs!
Carolina v. Tenn - NE plays Titans, so Go Panthers!
NO v. Washington - NE plays Redskins, so Go Saints!
Minn v. Oakland - CIN played Oakland, so Go Raiders!
7. Games that mean nothing to Cincinnati this weekend:
Detroit v Green Bay - both NFC teams and neither NE nor CIN play either one.
Arizona v Seattle - both NFC teams & only CIN plays BOTH. So rooting for one over another doesn't affect SOS.
I believe that's all the week 10 potential playoff implication impact games concerning Cincinnati. It also gives more reason to pay attention and root for certain teams this weekend.

Will Watt Blow Up Our Split O Line Plays ? |

Putting both tackles out wide, 3 players on each wide side, leaves the QB and 4 other players near the ball being snapped. ...So it's a 3 or 4 man O line instead of 5 or 6.....Now Watt takes 2 or 3 guys to block him anyway....How do Bengals keep Watt from blowing these formations up ?........You would think a defense would go basketball and defend the passing lanes, a player on each side to step in and intercept any screen passes for a quick 6 for the D, as many others blow through the 3 or 4 man O line to nail the QB. Still, I haven't seen defenses do that, afraid that if they don't get the basketball steal it's an easy TD for Bengals. Still, going 85 Bears on a 3 or 4 man O line would be tempting and doom for the QB, especially with a ball hawk on each side coming in on those passing lanes. Since the loaded up screen pass formations are telegraphing the play, why not jump the pass lanes as others blow up the middle and the QB. Unblocked D can be on the QB as soon as the ball is snapped, no time for a quality screen pass. .... I know he can audible the big tackles back in, but that takes time and sometimes the time clock runs out or a time out wasted. ...anyway, a player like Watt could be a problem for these trick formations with not enough blockers left to block him and his fellow D linemen.
Go Bengals, 9-0

fan jinx.
Like most of you, in the past, there were certain things i would do and not do. Whether it was during the week--or especially on game day--i followed certain routines, did and didn't do certain things based on circumstances, and generally felt that when i did these things it made some kind of difference. Even if i didn't really believe it made a difference, it made me feel more comfortable.
So this year, i haven't done any of that. If something comes up and i miss the opening kickoff (used to be a BIG no-no), like a couple weeks ago when the wife asked me "what's for lunch?" at 12:55, i just went to Kroger and got some skyline chili, tostitos and cheese and made some homemade nachos. Or my past 'routine' where i would follow a specific order of events on Sunday mornings; no more. Whether things are going good or bad, it doesn't matter. I don't sit with my feet or toes or hands in any particular way in order to not break the good or bad streak. I don't wear a particular article of clothing. I don't have the remote in a specific place depending on the quarter. This year i just decided to stay positive and more than anything, enjoy the journey, play to play. Every other football game i watch, i enjoy the back and forth and the drama and when the game is over i'm like, "wow, that was a great game". So i decided to watch Bengals games the same way. Keep the faith, enjoy the ride and not get all stressed out. Much more enjoyable.
Now, i also know that most people do these things tongue-in-cheek and realize they don't really have an effect on the game, but there are PLENTY of people that do think it really makes a difference.
It doesn't.
One more thing. There is no such thing as a Bo Jackson curse, or any kind of curse for that matter. Players play and they win or lose based on their performance. Cheer your face off and enjoy this ride. They don't come along very often.

The last time Rey Maualuga and Vontaze Burfict played in the same complete game together. Barring any setbacks Monday should break that streak. I would think we should see a major impact in our run defense with them in there together.

Has anybody seen any MNF promos? |

I've been pumped to see the ads for the MNF game. They've really improved this season and the commercials are actually sick. But I have no cable. And I've scourged the internet and none have been posted.
Has anybody here seen any? If so a description would be much appreciated.

How to beat the Patriots |

I do NOT think you can play Base Defense (Rush 4 and play man-to-man with 2 safety help) and beat the Patriots. Edelman; Gronkowski; Amendola and James White win too many man-man battles and Brady is too accurate and putting the ball where it needs to be. We saw this in last years Super Bowl vs Seattle and nothing has changed since then.
If I were calling the defense I would spend the entire game playing exotic looking 3rd down defenses even on 1st and 2nd downs. What I mean by this is...I would take Peko out of the game entirely. I would have Geno MJ and Dunlap rushing as DL. Then with the back 8 I would call all sorts of various blitzes and different rotational zone schemes with the DBs to try and confuse Brady.
Now I know the Patriots will simply try and pound the ball with double TEs all day running Blount against such a defense but my question to you is....wouldn't you rather have the Patriots running game and Blount try and beat you than Tom Brady? If you force them to run you have more chances for fumbles; more chances to hit a gap and stop run in the backfield or holding call that would be a drive killer. Also the confusion would most likely lead to 1-2 int or an extra couple sacks to stop drives.
I know such a strategy goes against conventional football but if the other team is better than your players man-to-man don't you have to at least try something different strategy wise to give your team a chance? I have a hard time believing Brady would accept running Blount 30-35 times and NOt audible into pass plays out of frustration.
Just my two cents. What does everyone else think? If we meet the PAtriots in the Playoffs should we play Base Defense or try something completely exotic like I have suggested.
