Reds July Game Thread 2024
(07-08-2024, 10:21 AM)TecmoBengals Wrote: and if they do not, do they become trade deadline sellers where they trade off a guy like India?

I just don't know ? It's very hard to get a feel for this team this year, injuries and suspensions and all. India has been mentioned as trade bait 3 or 4 times over last couple seasons.

On the one hand India's defense is very average too just not good. He's very streaky as a hitter like this season - .220 average in May, .380 average in June, and thus far in July .217.

He's at .273 thus far on the season but he could easily be back down to .225 in a few weeks.

In other words it wouldn't break my heart if they could get a couple decent prospects for like him and Sims or something?

Unless they win a bunch of games SOON, they'd do best trading off Montas. They can't jettison Candellario because of injuries to McLain and Encarnacion-Strand. Same with India, who has been their best hitter of late.

If there was ever a year to do minimal / nothing, THIS is it. They're 10.5 back of the Brewers, who most thought would take a step back this year due to a new manager and selling off their best SP. This team is not making the playoffs. The WC teams will come from the NLW and the NLE this year, in my opinion.

I agree

We really don't know what we have yet in CES, Marte, EDLC, Friedl, McClain and so on. Steer seems to be a major leaguer to build around. And I'd hate to see them throw in the towel on any of that bunch already.

Greene, Abbott, and Lodolo seem to be the makings of a good starting staff.

And I also agree this team is unlikely to make playoffs barring a major turn around. And I mean major!! They're waayyyy to inconsistent.

It's very clear it's not in your nature to be positive when they do win like sweeping the Yankees. You're just nowhere to be found. We get you hate this team since you repeat the same negative crap over and over. Just do us all a favor and not post here anymore.

I call them as I see them. This team is not getting better, only worse. Their philosophy of building up a franchise that has been down is not there. I can see you are a die hard Reds fan, I used to be. keep drinking the kool aid, that’s why no changes are being made.

I said the same things about  the Bengals, Marvin Lewis tenure.  He could not get them over the hill, and I see the same thing with David Bell.
If your not getting better, your getting worse.

Sweep the 50+ win Yankees in NYC - Excited
Get swept by the lowly Tigers at home - Gaah

This seesaw crap is what's gonna keep the Reds from getting into the WC.

TURN. THE. CORNER. ALREADY!!!!
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

They just called up Rece Hinds today. I sure hope he's better than Hurtubise and Dunn! I know it's asking a lot, but we sure could use one of these rookie call ups to actually come up and be good, like McLain was for us last year. This offense needs a shot in the ass in the worst way and we need one of these young, healthy outfielders to push Benson off the roster! As certain I am we miss the playoffs, having one of these young call ups take a spot and keep it would go a looooooong way towards roster construction moving forward. It seems like every year, we wonder who's playing the corner OF spots or if they'll add a platoon guy to what we already have. Like the Bengals and TE's pre-2024 Draft.

If that's all you care about, then why don't you stay away until they make the playoffs? But you can't. Just like Cinci4life said before, you only post when they lose. Your posts make you sound like a miserable person and that's coming from someone that bitches in here a lot. This team is 22nd in payroll and you're watching and waiting for the playoffs? There are 9 clubs with more than double the Reds payroll, including the currently 5th place Cubs, and there are only 12 playoff spots.

I still watched the Bengals when they sucked and will always do the same with the Reds. I don't need post-season success to make me root for a team that has one hand tied behind their back by bad management, a bad GM and bad owners while facing teams with almost unlimited budgets. That's also why I've become a bit of a fan of the Pirates and their manager Derek Shelton(29th in payroll). I also don't need post-season success to enjoy watching the growth of young players, especially Greene, Lodolo and Steer.

Friedl and Lodolo are coming back and McLain was just cleared to begin training. This is the best pitching staff that they've had in a looooong time. Castillo, Gray and Cy Young winner Bauer were the last pitching staff to make it to the (expanded) playoffs but that was only a 60 game season. All that they have to do is pick up 3.5 games a month to win the division. I don't expect them to win the division, but if they pick up only 2 games a month, they're in the Wild Card slot. They can be sellers and buyers at the same time. Montas and Candelerio are producers that are expendable and if the Reds can pick up a power hitting outfielder, make that deal.

Ashcraft sent back down to minors. I can't help but wonder if there isn't more going on with him than meets the eye ?

Yes

I'm so hoping Friedl, McClain, CES, and Marte can all get back and get it going and/or some other rookie steps up so we can say bye-bye Benson. The guy just doesn't appear to be able to hit ML pitching with any consistency.

He has 244 at bats and 111 strike outs!!! batting .189

Fairchild went on the 10 day IL also. Marte is the DH tonight so hopefully that means they know he needs help with his fielding.

Nothing really. He is who he is and they're still learning about Spiers. If his last outing is the outlier, then he's clearly earned the 5th spot over Ashcraft. If his last outing is the norm, then they'll find that out soon enough and keep looking. Williamson is still a question mark and Connor Phillips is still trying to find the strike zone.

2-0 in the middle of the 5th with a nice catch by Hinds for the 2nd out . . . gotta work on them nerves with the throws, though. Abbott with 5 shutout innings and 7 Ks. He looks like he has a couple more innings in him despite the two walks in the 5th.

It's nice to see the Reds capitalize on poor play by the opposition for a change instead of it being the other way around. I was getting tired of them turning another guy with a 5.5 ERA into Cy Young.

Please Bell, do something, anything, to get Benson out of this lineup.

Of course they have to do a puff piece about Cruz after his last outing. He came through as usual. Occasionally, you have a screw up. There's a reason that all good streaks come to an end and that reason is called baseball.

I think that Hinds just did something about that. Now don't go all 'Marte' on us.

Elly really is something else. Only reason this team is even worth watching.

Lets hope Hinds can keep it up.

And yes Marte seems lost at the plate.

Loved what I saw from Hinds last night.
It would be great to get that third OF spot solidified with someone.
I was thinking the OF was already solidified with Steer, Friedl, and Fraley going into the season, but there was practically nothing behind them.
Reds could use another power bat with a good arm, and Hinds provides that.
