Chase not Practicing
#61
(07-30-2024, 10:17 PM)bfine32 Wrote: Ja'Marr Chase is refusing to practice with his team because he wants more money with 2-years left on his contract. You and others can put a "happy spin" on that if you want.

I'll call it just like i would any other player in the NFL. I absolutely love Trey Hendrickson and he may be my current favor Bengal, but when he pulled his trade demand, I commented on it for what I thought it was. Never once did: "O Boy, Trey already knows how to rush the QB and is in great shape. He he decides to holdout it will give folks like Murphy and Ossai more reps in practice!!"

I commented negatively about Hendrickson as well. And if you want me to comment negatively about Chase, then here.." he should be practicing." My point though, and it still stands, does it really hurt anything or is it somewhat beneficial to let the younger guys have the reps. He should be practicing, but it's not the end of the world. Now if he was refusing to play, or being a cancer on the sideline, I would be royally pissed. He's not.

Same way I stand on this and yes I commented way negatively about Trey too.

Sounds like a deal is expected to be done.

Trey practiced day 1 and got dinged. This isnt' the same. If you are holding in you don't practice at all and never do.... Until the "hold in" is over. You don't practice then stop. see Jamar for an example on how a hold in is done if you want to ignore all other hold in's across the league to try to take a shot at Trey, who practiced during minicamp and ota's as well..... Unlike Chase.

Right. Not sure why this was even associated with Chase outside of a desperate attempt to take any criticism off of Chase.

I think you will see a unique contract. Potentially less guaranteed at signing than guys like Jefferson, due to the two years left, but still getting security. I think that Mike Brown might have been very deliberate with his comments, to try and bring some leverage back to the bengals side. I may be giving too much credit, but it seems like other teams get these things done rather easily… see DJ Moore.

Speaking of DJ Moore, is that closer to what Chases contract should look like, $27.5m/year? If I am the bengals I am going to chase now, since DJ signed a bit below the top end, but before Lamb re-signs. You might be able to get some discount….but maybe not.

Do you really think he needs the reps, (he's doing plenty of catching on his own) or is it more beneficial to let guys like Burton and Yoshi have more time with Burrow throwing to them. If Chase wants to give up some of the training camp reps, that can be more of an advantage than a disadvantage due to Chase already being an elite receiver. If he gets hurt, we will be glad Burton and the rest got the extra time.

It costs the team more than you might be willing to acknowledge. With two years left under contract, he needs to be setting the example for those younger receivers on the field. Getting back on the same page with the offense early, like a leader should.

As far as I'm concerned, this trend of the "hold in" is a bunch of shit and sets a bad example for up and coming players, as well as makes a poor representation of what it means to be one of the best at what you do for all of the great players before him. Pouting and demanding a new deal with two seasons left on the clock is like going to dinner and asking for dessert up front.

How would that scenario fare in the real world? "Hey boss, I know that I'm not due for a raise review for quite some time, but I want it now. Until I get it, I'll just be showing up and speak encouragingly to my potential replacements.."

Can someone provide info on how many star receivers got their big deals after their 3rd year? Chase should be doing this after year 4. I agree with those who say it's a little too soon for him to have played this card. Especially since he wouldn't even negotiate until JJ was done.

I also agree though that it shouldn't effect him much as long as he doesn't struggle with soft muscle issues (and drops) trying to come back a week before the season starts.

Heck even Tee didn't play his full card and miss all of training camp which he could have and I'm sure anyone else would have. Can we show some love to Tee for that given the heat he's takin online from Bengal fans this offseason.

If Chase signs early isn’t his first year substantially more? Versus what it is now?Isn’t that his motivation? Whereas for us he and Joe’s contract will be aligned time wise. Can’t see that’s great.
Romo “ so impressed with Zac ...1 of the best in the NFL… they are just fundamentally sound. Taylor the best winning % in the Playoffs of current coaches. Taylor led the Bengals to their first playoff win since 1990, ending the longest active drought in the four major North American sports, en and appeared in Super Bowl LVI, the first since 1988.

I get his position of wanting to cash in while the WR money is still astronomical, as who knows when teams will suddenly start realizing that new star receivers come into the league every year and devalue them like they did with RBs. Like I said, I understand his position, I just don't agree with how he's going about conveying his message.

Suit us to sign him earlier I’d imagine, the price is only going to go up. Has the feel of the finalities being done before he steps out to me. FO and Zac’s comments have that feel about them.

So even though we are making adjustments in are offense, Chase is good not being there , so why have Burrow  be there then?

Everything I've read says he is being a great mentor to them on the sidelines and helping them in any way he can. I'm just not that upset about it. Like I said before, if he was refusing to play, or if I had doubts he would be ready day 1, that would be different. And I fully acknowledge he should really be doing this next year, not this year, but he wants security.

If Chase gets his contract like he wants he will get it with 2 years left on his deal just like Burrow. Burrow is great and all but i'm reasonably confident we won't get an MVP level Burrow without Chase

I don't know about him hurting the team by letting the young WR's get more snaps with Burrow, but I completely understand not liking
the "hold in" trend as well.

True and when Trey came back and said all the right things and participated like a leader all was forgiven by pretty much everyone.

Once he can be extended he will probably be extended like he wants now. It was just stupid timing by both him and his agent at the time.

Completely understand this point of view. I just don't think it is hurting the team with the young WR's getting more snaps with Burrow.

Yep. If Ja'Marr was acting like he won't play in the regular season it would upset me. He isn't acting like this at all.

in what way has Chase "acted" like he won't play? He hasn't done anything all off-season w/ the team on the field.

No participating in any organized activities is the definition of acting like you won't play. Right now he's just showing up to avoid fines.

Perhaps you're trying too hard

He has been working with the young WR's, how is that not doing anything with the team all Offseason?

Chase is catching balls on the sidelines letting the young WR's work with Burrow.

Perhaps you are trying too hard lol

It’s naive to think Chase at this juncture is hurting the team. It’s naive to think he can wait until the week of either. If Joe wasn’t on the team or if he was somewhere else he’d have some diva in him. But name me a player once Zac got his guys that he’s not managed very well? Zac’s a players coach and an owners coach. He plays both sides well. But this is his biggest test.
