Chase not Practicing
"Let's get Chase instead of Sewell you guys. We can get good O line talent in later rounds."

Jamar Chase today: Looking like his price tag is too high even after the FO told Higgins and Bates to pound sand.

Oh yeah, and that O line talent in later rounds?

They can announce it next Thursday right before kickoff of the Chiefs game, again.

Edit: Christian Darrisaw is another good one 2 years early. Man I liked Darrisaw coming out lol.

I'm just having trouble seeing the logic of not signing him early, when you're able, if you know he's elite and you want him long term.

I get not liking him not practicing and the visuals of the whole situation this summer, but i don't see why they don't sign him before the price goes up more.

I think they’d like to tie him up longer. Don’t you? And they want him on his current deal until next year.

The optics look just as bad if not worse on the team though, imo. They let Bates walk, they didn’t extend Tee, they let Reader walk, etc. It will be “same old cheap Bengals” from the haters and national media until they pay another top deal to someone else besides Joe. This just feels very stubborn.

Well we don’t know the demands

This isn’t on MB…… Anymore. He said he’d bend over backwards not frontward.

Tee came back and practiced, Bates came back and practiced, Hendrickson participated all offseason. MB can’t buckle now and set a new standard of getting a deal out of him.

All of those lost players participated and played without a contract (and by now). That doesn’t happen without MB rep and he wouldn’t be wise giving that up when there are more players to extend soon. If we have the season we all are hoping for.

What's keeping them from offering a longer deal? In case i'm way off, they have the ability to structure it to their liking. Jefferson's cap hits the next 2 years are 8 and 15M.

Burrow's first 2 year hits are 19 and 29M. They can still keep the next 2 years lower than market value.

They can come with a 5 year extension and say, we're willing to give you this, a nice guarantee and signing bonus with an earlier out option to protect thier ROI, or to simply back load it in the hopes they renegotiate before he reaches ridiculous money.

This is shit they do for a living, i just can't see what the holdup is...unless Ja'Marr and his reps are just being exceptionally difficult and wanting it all. In that case, GTFO here J. I'd love to have him but he's not irreplaceable.

The highest paid player in the league should stay out of it. He could have did his part.

Plus as a fan don't you think our FO needs a lesson on cap gymnastics? I mean people are throwing out KcC not keeping Hill but KC also pushes the cap in ways the Bengals refuse to do. I mean it may seem small but is that gonna be the difference between KCs dynasty and us not quite getting it done.

He's already locked up for 1 more year. You're adding 0 extra years and paying a guy $20m more for the same 4 year addition.

Cap gymnastics are to create MORE cap space, not to rationalize how to give a guy $20m more than the highest paid guy got over the same amount of years to give yourself LESS cap space. Trying to pretend 4yr/$160m is the "same" as 4yr/$140m is not cap gymnastics, it's reality gymnastics.

I 100% agree that the team looks like the cheapass, hard-headed skinflints they're reputed to be.

Can't afford Bates because Burrow, Tee and Ja'Marr. Lose Bates for a dime. Can't sign Tee long term because Ja'Marr. Likely lose Tee next year for a dime. Screw around with the Chase contract because...why? Are his reps being completely unreasonable? Oh to be a fly on the wall like i was in '06.

I was on Team Sewell, but I am not sure I see the Bengals paying him the 4yr/$112m with $43m guaranteed at signing that he got from the Lions this offseason.

We were pleasantly surprised they paid Orlando Brown $16m/yr.

Sewell got $28m/yr which at the time made him the highest paid OL in the league and $3m/yr more than the previous highest paid (Tunsil) who was making $25m/yr. I feel like we'd be in the exact same situation right now.

It’s absolutely over guaranteed money. Chase said at the Super Bowl he wants his money upfront.

OK....I can't...

For all the Econ majors who say the Bengals will "save money" by signing him this year. I present this formula:

PV = FV / (1 + r)n

I was gonna say, what the hell makes people think it would have been any likelier they got Sewell’s deal done a year early.

No doubt.

Maybe i'm just looking at it all wrong. First world problems man. If you have a SB caliber team, you're going to have contract issues. It comes with the territory. Pain in the ass though.

They are probably already configuring the amount of cap they need to roll over for Mims extension. They see these OT contracts.

Agreed. Joe Burrow deserves 0 pass on any of this. Should he try to make as much as he can? For sure. Should he then also talk about how he wants to keep guys around him? F that. Stop talking out of both sides of your mouth.

Teams like Philly and Miami have figured out how to pay their QB’s and two WR’s. It’s hardly impossible.
