My less big name guy is Steve Clinkscale.
He has UC ties (not that that's a big boost to reputation, lol). He also worked with Harbaugh at Michigan and with LA this year. LA's corners did much better than expected, and they were mid round rookies. We have some early round youngsters that need that kind of guidance.
Also, although I dislike Harbaugh as a rival, I love his way of building culture and philosophy. His teams are always physical and can tackle. You have to think that might have rubbed off on Clinkscale over the years.

Christian Parker of Eagles. It would be a promotion for him and we get a Vic Fangio groomed guy.
To run a Fangio defense, we will need upgrade at interior D-Line and safety, however.

What concerns me is, can he do as well running a 4-3 scheme, as that is the personnel on the Bengals defensive roster. With the anticipated spending on offensive contracts coming, do we really think that the Bengals would also do another defensive overhaul?
The defense needs an overhaul.
They probably keep Tre and keep Battle and some of the recent draft picks.
I don’t think any other defensive players should be safe.
So yes they could switch scheme. If Hendrickson doesn’t fit the scheme he could be traded for a ransom too.
With where the defense is at I would be okay with a complete overhaul.
They could let half the defense go.
Of course the argument is they need to win now.
When it comes down to it I just want them to hire whoever is most capable of developing a dominant defense. Therefore the best coach should get the job.
We need someone who can evaluate talent well and let the dead weight go and develop a winning defense.

That's a good call.
There are a lot of interesting FA Chargers this year on D. Mack at DE, Ford and Tart at DT. Clinkscale is a DB guy, right? Mack is too old/pricey for us, but a mid level spend on Ford or Tart would make sense.

Yes. Clinkscale is the Chargers' DB coach.

So you're thinking that with roughly 2 months to the opening of the 'legal tampering' period, the Bengals will have found the DC they believe in going forward, and that he'll be able to lightning quick find his DL and LBs coaches, evaluate the current personnel, evaluate all of the pending free agents of the class, get everyone (FO included) on the same page heading into free agency and be ready to make solid offers heading into the tampering period?
I really admire your optimism, but I really don't think that the Bengals organization could possibly move that quickly.

I also like Jim Leonard in Denver. I believe he's their DBs coach - which granted is a stacked deck. But they were a really hard defensive backfield to penetrate, and Denver had a great overall defense.

Given the small scouting department, whoever they hire for DC or OL probably also needs to be adept at scouting and recommending prospects to draft. At least if they want to have any success.

In a 3-4 base, with current personnel I could see:
HILL-JACKSON-JENKINS
HENDRICKSON-PRATT-WILSON-OSSAI ( I'd love to see Ced Johnson in a 3-4 base)
Actually doesn't sound as far fetched when you say it like this Bfine. Doubt we go to a 3-4 as there would be struggles for at least a year
but if we bring in a DC who has featured it and he knows his shit we shouldn't close our minds to 3-4 thoughts.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Is he available?

Sunset, if we promote him to DC it would work. We would have to ask permission to interview him.

YW, actually 2 guys I like the best we might have to wait a bit to hire. The Lions assistant OL coach in Oliver and your guy here Parker
of the Eagles both of which are in the Playoffs and have a shot at going to the Super Bowl.

Ok, that makes perfect sense. However, do you think that the team management could get behind another first time Coordinator?

If we get an experienced guy with recent DC/HC experience (Saleh, Allen, Eberflus, Covington, Graham), then part of the job they just had is scouring the NFL to improve their D. The stretch for them is evaluating what we have already.
Now, a coordinator guy (Clinkscale, etc) probably has a narrower focus to just his position group, and will likely have to play catch up more.

Well, you're listing a slew of random names. My response was specifically geared toward hiring Robert Saleh and a potential transition to a base 3-4 defense. I seriously question the ability to turn over and attain the proper personnel to execute a different defensive scheme in less than 2 months, especially with the other variables to be addressed.

Sunset, I have kept an eye on this guy since he was in Virginia State. I am in NOVA/DC area and there has been talk of him for the past several years.
To your question - if the management hired a QB coach as a HC, then I would think they may consider Parker as DC.
I would like to see veteran DL and LB coaches to surround him if we do hire him.

Your logic makes perfectly good sense, it's just with the pressure of Burrow's peak years and gaining a title, as to weather they would go the 1st time DC route again; after the way the Anarumo situation turned out. That is not to say that I'm comparing the two, just noting the one common factor.

I hear you Sunset. This has been such a devastatingly disappointing year, that I feel we need to truly evaluate the strategy and mindset of this entire organization.
Hiring Parker checks multiple boxes, but the fact remains that he will bring a style of defense which can mirror the style of our offense. But we will need to spend on our D-line to make it work.

I've always been of the mindset that in order to have a strong defense, you must control the middle of the field. That begins with IDL, ILB and Safety. Sure, having great edge rushers helps, but it you've got boss DTs they'll flush the QB to average DEs. Same with secondary, if you've got great Safety play, then you can get by with average CBs. It's also more cost efficient to go the fundamentals route.
