That might be jumping the gun, but it WILL be the wrong move that only our bone headed office would make.... Hilarious

I am not sure how you are determining "best" season, but from both stats and PFF scores, 2020-2021 were some of Wilson's worst.
2020 (backup) - 33 tackles, 2 INTs, 3 PDs, 54.7 PFF score
2021 (full-time starter) - 100 tackles, 4 INTs, 4 PDs, 53.9 PFF score

Since then:
2022 - 123 tackles, 1 INT, 4 PDs, 72.7 PFF score
2023 - 135 tackles, 4 INTs, 9 PDs, 62.6 PFF score
2024 (11 games) - 104 tackles, 0 INT, 1 PD, 72.3 PFF score (boosted heavily by his run defense this year)

It's hard to gauge LB play just from stats without having the D-line play information as well, since one affects the other.

1) Bengals might look to make sure to bring in a guy who runs a 4-3 given that's the personnel they have been running for years. It would likely take an overhaul to convert it properly into a 3-4, and the Bengals aren't in a rebuilding mode.

2) We might see the new DC actually go back down to primarily 4 DBs instead of 5, going back to 3 LBs.

Noteworthy that Eberflus ran a 4-3 in his time in Indy.

I'm not an huge X's and O's guy but I was thinking about that too , would the Bengals be willing to run a 3-4 ? I'm sure other franchises have done it and when's the right time to switch ? The defense can't get worse and the best coordinators available might run 3-4's why eliminate them because you don't want to change  ?  What direction is the league trending towards are 3-4's harder to scheme against ? I feel like a lot more of these college edge guys are smaller weight wise and don't fit a 4-3 and you have to draft more plodding slower guys cause they need to anchor in a 4-3. Guys like Hubbard, Murphy or the big guys we always draft back in the day Will Clarke, Michael Johnson ,Hunt and so on.  Do we have guys on the roster that could play in a 3-4 ? I believe Hendrickson played in a 3-4 with the Saints ? I think Mckinnley Jackson could play NT ? At 6'3 could Kris Jenkins jr. play a DE in a 3-4 ? Murphy has the length at 6'5 maybe he adds a few pounds an could make it work. Obviously you need more edge guys outside of Trey who can stand up. I think Wilson can play linebacker in a 3-4 ? Just asking for opinions and if it could work not saying it will or that we should.

I would think because the current crop of talent may not be equipped to handle that and it could take multiple years to get guys out and get the talent in that fits that scheme.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs

Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

It normally takes 2 or three years to successfully switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and vice-versa. Plus, Mike Brown likes the 4-3, so expect a 4-3 guy to be hired.

That’s what I figured guess the best time to switch would be during a full rebuild in this cause the offense is in good shape so now’s not the time.

Tray Scott would be a name to keep an eye on. Maybe a lateral move.

Joe Rudolph with his Wisconsin Oline roots for a lateral move.

Titans fired their GM. I wonder if the next guy keeps Brian. If he does get replaced Zac should find something for him on our staff as long as he brings Bill to coach the OL.

For DC I would be thrilled with either Robert Saleh or Dennis Allen.

In today's nfl the 3-4 vs 4-3 isn't really a thing. You're probably going to get a fair amount of both with Nickle being the base.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

Comes from the Belichick tree. IDK much about him, but the fact another team is considering for HC is impressive. He also worked w/ Marvin Lewis last year. Prety good resume.

Saleh is my first choice based entirely on his defensive performances.

I doubt he is the guy though. Bengals never go for high profile obvious choices. That and he probably gets a HC gig—possibly the jags.

what is interesting is that the first 2 interviews scheduled were on no one's wish or likely lists

Anyway, players often emulate their coaches, and we could definitely use a bit of nastiness on that defense. I watch how fired up Dan Campbell’s players get by him and I end up wanting to bite some kneecaps off. Tongue

We had that back in 2015 with Vontaze, Reggie, Adam and the boys. The league and NFL fan community vilified them, when basically they were just imitating the Steelers, good hard football.  Mellow

This x100.

At least on the 2nd part.

I am on record as not being a huge fan of our offensive philosophy and playcalling. Callahan is the architect.

I am never a fan of hiring "scheme" coaches in any sport. Show me a coach who is willing to adapt his scheme to maximize his players, and that's the person I want.

In our situation, what do we do with Hendrickson in a 3-4? Move him off the line to OLB or play him as the 3 man end?

The common denominator (other than skin-tone) is they both cut their teeth under Bilechick, but neither has the AFC North experience Zac said he's be looking for.

Saleh does put together some fine, aggressive defenses. I have no issue with his coaching abilities. What concerns me is, can he do as well running a 4-3 scheme, as that is the personnel on the Bengals defensive roster. With the anticipated spending on offensive contracts coming, do we really think that the Bengals would also do another defensive overhaul?

Well being as pass rush is Trey's strength and run defense is his weakness, then a move to OLB would make sense. Dude's the same size/skillset as Watt.

In a 3-4 base, with current personnel I could see:

HILL-JACKSON-JENKINS
HENDRICKSON-PRATT-WILSON-OSSAI ( I'd love to see Ced Johnson in a 3-4 base)
